This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

Another greatest hit off the Ziggens discography that has no comments. This song has a country feel to it, but is really great with great lyrics and musicianship. There's a reason The Ziggens were Bradley Nowell's favorite band. And it wasn't just because they were close friends. He truly loved their music. And so do I, but not as much as Sublime and a few other bands/artists. The Ziggens are a great band to listen to when you need a change of pace and they've got so many good songs and a few great ones. They're also very funny and don't take themselves so seriously, which is refreshing.
It seems like Big Salty Tears and Pistol Pete are the only songs most people may have ever heard from The Ziggens. Maybe Tim the Dinosaur as well. Also check out their surf songs, the ones that mostly have no lyrics, but are totally dope.
