We're All Alone Lyrics
Outside the rain begins
And it may never end
So cry no more on the shore a dream
Will take us out to sea
For ever more.. for ever more
Close your eyes Ami
And you can be with me
'Neath the waves through the caves of hours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone..we're all alone
Close the window calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
Learn how to pretend
Once a storys told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do lovers too so cast
Your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear..oh hold me dear
Close the window calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
All's forgotten now
We're all alone..all alone
Close the window calm the light
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
Throw it to the wind my love
Hold me dear
All's forgotten now my love
We're all alone....
And it may never end
So cry no more on the shore a dream
Will take us out to sea
For ever more.. for ever more
Close your eyes Ami
And you can be with me
'Neath the waves through the caves of hours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone..we're all alone
Close the window calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
Learn how to pretend
Once a storys told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do lovers too so cast
Your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear..oh hold me dear

Throw it to the wind my love
Hold me dear

Actually, the ones above are the correct lyrics. The original version is the one written by Boz Scaggs which he wrote in 1976.
Rita Coolidge changed the lyrics of the song to "close your eyes and dream" in her 1977 version. Frankie Valli was the first cover of the song as followed by Canadian singer's version by Bruce Murray in 1977.
The meaning of the song is about forgiving past loves and throwing one's caution to the wind. Dee7's comment i believe is most apt.
Rita also sings "Owe it to the wind" instead of "Throw it to the wind".

Does Boz also sing this, or does he sing "Throw" that sounds like "Owe"?

"Throw" makes more sense lyrically.
"Throw" makes more sense lyrically.
Boz says "throw it to the wind". Rita's lyrics don't make as much sense to me as the original.

A beautiful song by Boz Scaggs. One of the best off the magical Silk Degrees album. When I was teenager, I had a friend who insisted on playing only loud grating music by Led Zeppelin, and the like. But when he heard this song in my house he was stunned. He wanted to listen to it repeatedly.
Though I've listened to this song intently dozens of times, I could never understand the wording. Perhaps it was the phrasing, perhaps Boz's accent, whatever. The LP didn't come with lyrics in the sleave. But now that I read the song, I think the meaning is fairly clear. It's about two people finding safety and comfort in each other. We're all alone, safe from the concerns of the outside world. The singer quiets and calms his worried companion. We're safe here together. 'Close the window, calm the light'. Whatever bad story she has experienced, it doesn't need to be told, 'throw it to the wind'; like roses, it will wither. She can escape it now. If need be, they can escape together in the quietness of a dream.Â
I’m really surprised someone hasn’t said this yet, but this song is about someone who has died, left behind their lover, and is telling them they can be together still in memory and in fantasy. That’s it.
@oriononthehorizon I'm sure you're right. I've gone over and over the original version of the lyrics (not the ones Rita Coolidge had changed). I was baffled by the line "Close your eyes, Ami..." until I realized it was how the spirit of a female lover (the "Amie," or "girlfriend" in French) would address, and comfort, the love she left behind (her "Ami," or "boyfriend"). I can understand interpretations that suggest the song might be about a homosexual relationship, but they seem to be forgetting the simpler interpretation. In either case, "We're All Alone" is bound to have a powerful emotional...

@oriononthehorizon No, It's actually not about dead people at all. He wrote it for his true love. It was before he divorced his first wife. The story tells about lost love that he will never forget and he wants to believe that she ("Ami") is also thinking about him. He wants to believe that she was in love with him once and deep in her heart she cries about her lost love too. So he makes an imagery dream world. A place where they could be together forevermore. No one and nothing can separate them now. They are all alone...

He will never let her go...She should learn how to pretend that this is real...
Someone, somewhere said that it is an "optimistic song with happy ending, but in fact, it is a quiet sad song, written in a major scale. Believe me, in those days life was more romantic and complicated regarding relationships. Although hippies were already around but still... People were taking much more seriously the fillings, families and responsibilities than today. Those who are older will understand.
I think this is about a couple that has been together for years and one is dying..he is saying its ok to go, that he will always be with her and she with him.
Outside the rain begins And it may never end (she is taking her last breath and he can see no end to his sadness)
So cry no more, on the shore a dream Will take us out to sea Forevermore, forevermore (She need not cry or feel any pain because they will ride the sea together, forever)
Close your eyes Amy And you can be with me 'Neath the waves, through the caves of hours Long forgotten now We're all alone, we're all alone
(its ok to go Amy...remember our life together, it may be hard to remember but its ok to go as we are together...always)
Close the window, calm the light And it will be all right No need to bother now Let it out, let it all begin Learn how to pretend
From her deathbed...the window is closed and the lights turned low, dont worry about trivial stuff, release all those negative feelings and letting go of all your earthly worries. Put on a face for those who you leave.
Once a story's told It can't help but grow old Roses do, lovers too, so cast Your seasons to the wind And hold me dear, oh, hold me dear (Our story is as old as time but I need to hold you and remember your touch)
Close the window, calm the light And it will be all right No need to bother now Let it out, let it all begin All's forgotten now
Its just about our love and being here together
We're all alone, all alone
Close the window, calm the light And it will be all right No need to bother now Let it out, let it all begin Owe it to the wind, my love, hold me dear
All's forgotten now, my love We're all alone
@turtle68 I agree absolutely in that it's a song about the cusp of the end of life.

I feel it's a song about a dying woman and her love who predeceased her, coming to take her to be with him where they were happiest forever.

"Cast your seasons to the wind" is a classic metaphor for death. When you're on the verge of death, nothing matters anymore, does it?

I think they're not together anymore. The woman might've been suffering of a broken heart still. The man is telling her not to cry anymore. By closing her eyes and remembering the good memories that they had together which has long been forgotten, they could be together in her thoughts.
Let it out, let it all begin. Let all the good memories out and begin to remember what they had. Pretend that they're together.
He's telling her to sort of forgive him, I think? To throw it to the wind. Whatever happened in the past it will fade away and the hurt will be gone. Everything fades. He's asking her to relive the good memories and to hold him dear in her thoughts.
All's forgotten now. All the sad experience has been forgotten...all the hurt. Time to move on and with them moving on, the pain will be gone. With the pain gone, there is nothing left but the memories. In those memories, they're all alone.
LOL...do you live in some magical fairytale where everybody's happy in their dreams. The song is sad. It's not happy. For gawd's sake, climb into the present and stay awhile...

@GoRockTheirWorld It is a sad song, but not a hopeless song. It is resigned but still comforting to me. It is a song about change and being able to accept it and let things happen as they will.

100% agree. Thank you

I realized the meaning of this song AFTER I was in that situation. If I have just known it BEFORE then I would have known how to get closer to her. She (STEPHANIE) had a problem and was really down and hurt from her past relationship but the guy wants her back, and she was confused... Just in that time I got to know her and fell in love at first sight, and her friends supported me by saying I am better than her guy... She gave me the very precious chance and her friend (NERIZZA) took us to the BEACH at midnight and left us two ALL ALONE in that beach. We talked shyly cos we both do not know how to start, and I wanted to hold her hand or kiss her but I did not have any courage or was too afraid I may violate or shock her... Then it STARTED TO RAIN, and I was at a loss of ideas or suggestions or any moves, so we walked away from the beach and rode the public jeepney, where she got down at her house and I went home too... The next day I listened to this song and I said wow, that could have been what was supposed to really happen if I only knew before the true meaning of this song. WE WERE ALL ALONE and I did not know what to do. The next day she texted me that she and her guy are back together. It really hurts me now.
I am surprised there is no comment on this beautiful song. First of all, a correction. 'Close your eyes Ami' should be Close your eyes and dream.
Not all loving relationship is plain sailing. We all must experience ups and downs in our relationship. This songs captures the moment where the two in love just wants to forget all the bad memories and enjoy the moment of 'loneliness' of two. I particularly like the words of 'cry no more on the shore, a dream will take us out to sea'. We all need this to transcend our imperfectness.
Rita Coolidge, Linda Eder have also sang this song. It is Boz's version I like most.Does anyone know who is the original singer of this song?
I'm also surprised only one other person commented so far. This is my favourite by Boz Skaggs. I heard the Rita Coolidge version first, but I like his more. As far as I know, he was the original singer as he wrote the wong. Maybe it was an album track or maybe it was a single, but not such a big hit. Then Rita did a cover and it was a hit. I don't know if Boz then released his own version as a single based on that, or if people started paying attention to the original thanks to Rita....

I'm not sure I really understand the meaning. I was kind of hoping to see what other people think. I agree that the couple in the song have had ups and downs along the way. The song talks about 'once a story's told, it can't help but grow old, Roses do lovers too..." I talk this as meaning the couple have a long history together. He's saying it isn't perfect, but then nothing is. But he loves her and wants to be with her and asks her to be with him. I don't quite get the 'learn how to pretend' part. Is he asking her not to worry about things from the past that have troubled them, or which might not be quite how she likes it? Just to let it go, enjoy the time together and come to him... I take it that way.
A beautiful song in any way.
A single, totally committed and forever loving relationship is difficult to be found these days. Probably only in love story than real life. That is the reason sometimes we have to pretend and forget the wrong doing of the other half.

@louichanon "Learn how to pretend" is the line that throws me off too. The whole song seems to be about accepting reality and being okay with things in spite of it, which is why that line makes no sense to me.

@constantlam This is one of my favorite songs. Boz Scaggs is the songwriter and original recording artist for this. Actually, the lyric is written "Close your eyes, ami" - Rita Coolidge and it as "Close your eyes and dream." She also changed the Boz lyrics "Throw it to the wind" to "Owe it to the wind." Such a beautifully written and performed song! :)

Rita Coolidge changed it to close your eyes and dream boz scaggs originally wrote close your eyes Ami. What's interesting is Ami means "male friend" in one context if this is the original intent, how would it change the meaning?was it about an experimental homosexual relationship of a man looking back on his life and contemplating.
@mduva56 Very interesting thought. Who really knows what was going on in his mind when he wrote it.

I'm wondering if this song is about becoming empty nesters. maybe they had a tough time with their teens and have some regrets but it's just back to the two of them. I know, this is probably not what it means, but for those of us who were teens when this song came out, we know that loneliness and darkness of having the kids leave home....and rediscovering your spouse. This beautiful song sounds a little like that.
It is about death and love. I think this song is talking about the death of his son Oscar by heroin overdose. The giveaway is "close your eyes, ami" (not the Rita Coolidge version where she changes the word ami to dream) Ami means a dear male friend. I don't think Boz was gay. I think he's referring to his son. And he's consoling his wife, telling her "we're all alone" and keep dreaming and remember the good times. "learn how to pretend." Read the lyrics with this in mind and it all makes total sense.
