I'm wondering if this song is about becoming empty nesters. maybe they had a tough time with their teens and have some regrets but it's just back to the two of them. I know, this is probably not what it means, but for those of us who were teens when this song came out, we know that loneliness and darkness of having the kids leave home....and rediscovering your spouse.
