I am surprised there is no comment on this beautiful song. First of all, a correction. 'Close your eyes Ami' should be Close your eyes and dream.
Not all loving relationship is plain sailing. We all must experience ups and downs in our relationship. This songs captures the moment where the two in love just wants to forget all the bad memories and enjoy the moment of 'loneliness' of two. I particularly like the words of 'cry no more on the shore, a dream will take us out to sea'. We all need this to transcend our imperfectness.
Rita Coolidge, Linda Eder have also sang this song. It is Boz's version I like most.Does anyone know who is the original singer of this song?
I'm also surprised only one other person commented so far. This is my favourite by Boz Skaggs. I heard the Rita Coolidge version first, but I like his more. As far as I know, he was the original singer as he wrote the wong. Maybe it was an album track or maybe it was a single, but not such a big hit. Then Rita did a cover and it was a hit. I don't know if Boz then released his own version as a single based on that, or if people started paying attention to the original thanks to Rita....

I'm not sure I really understand the meaning. I was kind of hoping to see what other people think. I agree that the couple in the song have had ups and downs along the way. The song talks about 'once a story's told, it can't help but grow old, Roses do lovers too..." I talk this as meaning the couple have a long history together. He's saying it isn't perfect, but then nothing is. But he loves her and wants to be with her and asks her to be with him. I don't quite get the 'learn how to pretend' part. Is he asking her not to worry about things from the past that have troubled them, or which might not be quite how she likes it? Just to let it go, enjoy the time together and come to him... I take it that way.
A single, totally committed and forever loving relationship is difficult to be found these days. Probably only in love story than real life. That is the reason sometimes we have to pretend and forget the wrong doing of the other half.

@louichanon "Learn how to pretend" is the line that throws me off too. The whole song seems to be about accepting reality and being okay with things in spite of it, which is why that line makes no sense to me.

@constantlam This is one of my favorite songs. Boz Scaggs is the songwriter and original recording artist for this. Actually, the lyric is written "Close your eyes, ami" - Rita Coolidge and it as "Close your eyes and dream." She also changed the Boz lyrics "Throw it to the wind" to "Owe it to the wind." Such a beautifully written and performed song! :)

A beautiful song in any way.
