Only Rain Lyrics
Hey scientist please save us from our rainy days
because your counterpart in the magic art is manufacturing judgment day
there's a fell wind blowing out of the east
bringing famine drought and plague
well now at least that's what they say
Rain fell like judgment
across my windowpane
said it fell like judgment
But it was only rain
well I know what's wrong and I know what's right
and I know that evil exists sure as day turns into night
when a man gets down on his knees to pray you know he'll find what he is able
but chances are he'll find it either way
Rain fell like judgment
across my windowpane
said it fell like judgment
But it was only rain
oh lord have mercy on a humble man
lost in the wilderness without a guiding hand
Rain fell like judgment
across my windowpane
said it fell like judgment
But it was only rain
Rain fell like judgment
across my windowpane
said it fell like judgment
But it was only rain
because your counterpart in the magic art is manufacturing judgment day
there's a fell wind blowing out of the east

I may be wrong on this, but what I get from the lyrics is, the tendency of religious extremism throughout the years to claim calamity and disaster as fury from an angry god. e.g. "The fundamentalist Christian god's destruction of the decadence and depravity of New Orleans" as some would say. Or as Pat Robertson would have it, Haiti's devastation due to some voodoo pact with the devil in exchange for independence from the French.
Either way, it seems decidedly evil to me to parade the shattered lives of countless people as a clarion call for whatever it is that you're pushing.
I think you're correct...religious people would look at the rain and assume that it is caused by "god" as some sort of payback for bad things that humans have done, but Greg looks at it in a scientific way..."It's just rain".

@jtpow However he then turns it in the last verse: O Lord have mercy on a humble man Lost in the wilderness without a guiding hand

Calling on deity to help him i his time of fear and lostness.

As a Christian I feel like my children are being bombarded with fear messages from Non theistic media and science. Waters are rising and will drown cities, heat is increasing owing to global warming making parts of the world unliveable, eco systems are being destroyed and animals species exterminated. There is war, extremism, lack of jobs, hunger and devastation from brexit...

There is war, extremism, lack of jobs, hunger and devastation from brexit etc. That's a shitty message our children are getting. Devastation and a zombie apocalypses type future.A return to the dark ages or complete extermination .Meteors, sun burst etc. its a pretty gloomy out look
In the story of Noah God gives the rainbow as a sign the world will never drown under a flood again - so asking for mercy from God is to ask for help and hope in a lost world.
O Lord have mercy on our children

When I hear this song I think they're talking about how many of the world religions (although the East is mentioned explicitly) create unnecessary anxiety by attributing every natural disaster to something religious. I don't see this as pointing only at religious leaders with an agenda (scientists' counter part in the magic art) but also at people who believe this sort of thing over science. "Chances are he'll find it either way" To me this seems like the observation that despite facts, if people are looking for something that they want to believe they'll find a way to fit it into their reality (this is the human tendency of confirmation bias). I really like this song!
I think you guys put a nice little bow on this song.
I feel that Rain is the idiocracy, the lies and the stupidity people are getting fed with every day. thus the Rainy days.
The counterpart to scientists would obviously be priests, the christian right-wingers, companies and other people who will benefit by keeping people in fear and ignorance.
These people are constantly talking about changes and other cultures as something horrible and particularly muslims, russians and other people from the "east".
So scientists and other intelligent people, enlighten everyone about facts and how it really works, save us from the idiocracy (the rainy days)
But until then, the stupid and false propaganda these religious and power/money-hungry people are falling upon us, bringing us closer to the "judgment day", made up by the very same people.
But there is not judgment day. there is only stupidity thus "It fell like judgment but it was only rain"
I agree with you guys, but I think its more about your own personal fear when facing the world. The "rain" FEELS like the end of the world, which is why you buy their message that it is. And I think it says that its true that religion helps you live without fear, to find your inner strength by giving you rules and conviction. However, you can find it without religion, you can overcome your existential fears if you look deep enough into yourself. Science here is then perception that allows us to recognize the world once we overcome our fear, and why science does not automatically win and religion has more power over people
Rain fell like judgement - is a metaphor, and he calls it out directly after "but it was only rain" - you guys said it already but I'll say it again! The rain could seem like gods wrath, but it's not. it's just rain.
The rest of the song is pretty obvious - prayer doesn't really do anything.
They are respectful and understanding of the concepts of religion.
This atheist when in a moment of weakness or crisis finds himself singing and crying to this song and the one before it "The Day The Earth Stood Stall".
BR created melodic hardcore and almost only them make it work when they go for songs like this. Another I find that hits hard inside is "Cease" amongst many others.
