Hard to Please Lyrics
Maybe if you came about
Maybe if you turned this ship around
If you waited this one out
and just put your head down
Oh, in your dreams you find out
Though it’s not quite how you remember
In your dreams you find out
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard to please
Maybe if you lightened up
Maybe if you wrote that anthem
Raising high a Dixie Cup
Don’t put your hand down
Oh, in your dreams you find out
Though it’s not quite how you remember
In your dreams you find out
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard to please
What is it worth to you to be a free someone?
What is it worth to you? What would you do?
Everything.
Maybe if you came about
Baby don’t you run this ship aground
Feet of water in the well,
but you can’t keep her head down
No, you can’t keep her head down
Oh, in your dreams you find out
Though it’s not quite how you remember
In your dreams you find out
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard to
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard to please
Everything's greener
Everything's greener
Everything's greener
Maybe if you turned this ship around
If you waited this one out
and just put your head down
Though it’s not quite how you remember
In your dreams you find out
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard to please
Maybe if you wrote that anthem
Raising high a Dixie Cup
Don’t put your hand down
Though it’s not quite how you remember
In your dreams you find out
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard to please
What is it worth to you? What would you do?
Everything.
Baby don’t you run this ship aground
Feet of water in the well,
but you can’t keep her head down
No, you can’t keep her head down
Though it’s not quite how you remember
In your dreams you find out
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard to
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard
Everything’s greener
You’re still hard to please
Everything's greener
Everything's greener

She fears her partner wants to end the relationship because he thinks there is something better than her. Maybe?
I think it's the other side of "ignorance is bliss." You could be dumb and happy, but she can't be. She's always pushing harder and trying hard, but in her dreams the other side of the fence is so much better. She thinks about "lightening up" raising her Dixie cup high to whatever anthem is the song of happy people, but she can't "run her ship aground." Instead of keeping her head down and out of the way like everyone else, she has to keep being tough.
OK this could simply be me projecting (most song interpretations usually entail just that) but I get the feeling this song is about a parent that is hard to please, possibly emotionally absent or abusive. The lines "raising high a Dixie cup, don't put your hand down" struck me as references to church basement folding-chair group therapy/AA/NA meetings. Lots of people with parents that were "hard to please" find themselves in such meetings at one time or another. But it was "What is it worth to you to be a free someone? What would you do? Everything." in particular that gave me the impression of someone trying to break free from the oppressive criticism of an emotionally abusive parent. Like I said, could be all my own stuff but that's just how this one struck me.
