Bamboo Bones Lyrics
Don't let them break you
Don't let them tell you who you are
Doesn't matter where you come from
You always have a floor to sleep on
And you have your bamboo bones
Nervous energy, blind ambition
Skin of your teeth
Push back, push back
Push back with every word and every breath
What God doesn't give to you
You've got to go get for yourself
What God doesn't give to you
You've got to go get for yourself
What God doesn't give to you
You've got to take it for yourself
I'm embarrased to admit it
I've got no grip
I'm leading with my jaw
Can you see it from a distance
Does it look ridiculous
I guess that's just what I have to live with
Still I have a mind to think
Knees to break
You standing beside me
Gonna push back, push back
Push back with every word and every breath
What God doesn't give to you
You've got to go get for yourself
What God doesn't give to you
You've got to go get for yourself
What God doesn't give to you
You've got to take it for yourself
For yourself
What God doesn't give to you
What God doesn't give to you

This song is so good and so powerful. I definitely find that in my 20s as you move into positions of leadership etc. and you want to change things you have to be your own support system. "...push back, push back, push back, with every word and every breath."
After really listening and paying attention, I feel for a few songs from White Crosses that I can hear lyrics about Laura's feelings as a transgender person. This song in particular has me thinking of it.
"What God doesn't give to you," meaning that she was not born with "the right gears" so to speak, and that in order to fix it she has to take care of it on her own instead of nature. I feel like the second verse especially may relate to this a lot too? I could be entirely wrong about the song, but that's my take of it.
Best song on the album, and one of Against Me!'s best song, period. They're growing up and they're changing, but it's not a bad thing. I'll miss the old AM! but my god, this album is fantastic.
Incredible song, incredible album. I fell in love after the first time through.
My favorite song of 2010
work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you.
Laura Jane has said this is an atheist anthem. Works for me.
