I wouldn't really say it was about having unreturned feelings for someone else, to me it sounds more like it was a past relationship which started a long time ago, and the singer is remembering the time in September they were together hence the line: "You're a throwback to forever"
But the girl he loved still wants to forget and not remember that they were together at all and wants to "leave it all behind" and the singer wants to know if their relationship together mattered at all in her eyes anymore. And the line "Cause you'll always be the one who says goodnight, goodnight" can be seen as the way she ended the relationship and she will always be the one to cut things off in relationships. The singer suffers more in the relationship because she makes all the decisions: "Hanging limp between your fingers" But that's just my take on it...

Basically, in my opinion, it's about one person having feelings for another with the other one either not returning them, or having them at some stage but then losing them. The first verse sounds like he wants to go back to a time when everything was perfect with them. "Could you always be the one who says goodnight" is fairly obvious, him wanting her to be the last person he sees at night and the first person he sees in the morning..
As for the video, that basically looks like she thought that they were perfect for each other and that something could happen, but he never saw her that way.
I watched a "making of" to the video and the video is about the girl basically just thinking about being with the guy and wishing she was, however i don't think this is what the actual lyrics meanings were intended for. I agree with TheMillerJ about it seeming like there was a relationship but isn't anymore, and one person has moved on and changed whereas the other hasn't. I don't get what it means by "you'll wait until your first time, you'll wait until theres something wrong" though D:
