Grow Till Tall Lyrics

(Everyone : Everyone : Everyone : Everyone)

You'll know, when's time to go on
You'll really want to grow and grow till tall
They all, in the end, will fall

You'll know, when's time to go on
You'll really want to grow and grow till tall
They all, in the end, will fall

You'll know, when's time to go on
You'll really want to grow and grow till tall
They all, in the end, will fall

Grow till tall, they all, in the end, will fall
They, in the end, will turn and fall

You'll know, you'll grow
You'll know, you'll know
You'll know, you'll know
You'll know

You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know
You'll... know

I've seen other people interpreting the end not as "you'll know" but rather "Not You" over and over. Listening I definitely think it sounds more like that. Of course with his accent, listening is of dubious value when it comes to figuring it out, but yeah. Someone said that interpretation could mean something like "in the end they'll all fall... not you." Suddenly a song which seemed kind of melancholy seems much more uplifting? I don't know.

That is always how I have interpreted it as well. Upon listening to it ( dozens of times) and hearing it live, it sounds like "not you".

I may be looking to deep into this, but it seems like a tree-like analogy to me about growing up.

You know you have to move on and grow, and you want to be something amazing and grand, but in the end everyone "falls" or passes on. It may also be about watching someone else who has grown "tall", and seen them fall away from you. Afterwards, you realize you have the same fate ahead of you, and that's life.

My Interpretation

from a literal POV i think this song could be about the little seeds buried within a forest floor. which never get a chance to grow until old trees die and fall; creating spaces for the elements to reach them and stimulate their growth. then it becomes a race to the top, whichever plant reaches it claims the spot and guarantees it's survival.

metaphorically speaking, this song could be about not letting oneself give into despair when times are hard. we all grow internally from our own experiences in life, whether or not we are capable to completely overcome whatever obstacles we face. it's thru understanding, meditation, looking deep into the self that a way can be found to become free. in the end, these giant walls, will crumble and fall like old trees in a forest. only then you'll truly know the time has come to move on...

At the beginning of the song I hear "You know, inside you long". To me "when it's time to go on" just doesn't fit, even having listened to different live renditions.

@magloot I think you are right, I guess it means "you knew inside you for a long time".

@grey7 My understanding is "You know you have this deep longing inside" which is reinforced by "you really want"

@magloot Hmm I listened to the the Go Quiet version and it now sounds like "You know it\'s time to, Won\'t you really want to.." but "it\'s time to" also does not sound right since it sounds more like "sum may tru".

I love love love this, just like a bunch of his other songs I get goosebumps from it. I'm not sure what it means... but I have a guess. I think it may be about facing a huge choice in life and only depending on yourself. I feel like it's about listening to your gut feelings and trusting your instincts.

For me this is about being bullied, having your ambitions belittled by others. Growing till tall could mean to stand out from the crowd, to gain self belief and to achieve what you want despite others. Knowing that your detractors will fall in the end brings me great comfort. They will fall and you will grow.

Musically this is a fantastic song. Building from delicate vocals and sublime music the harsher more electronic end of the song is the perfect contrast and adds more power to the line "you'll know" emphasising that you will, in time, grow.

@HelenFH That\'s interesting. I am surprised by the strange shouting at the end of the live version, and for the lack of a better word, the rage of it, perhaps it is more of a triumphing rage. I am not sure what was shouted but I think it\'s something like "They so cold, or today so cold".

I, personally, have never found any official lyrics to Jonsi's songs, so I don't know what he is actually saying, but I hear the lyrics a little different at one part. At the part where it says "They, in the end, turn and fall" ; I hear "They, in the end, wither and fall".

Lyric Correction

Also, I'd like to note, I think Jonsi's pronunciation is off. I think he is saying "wilter" instead of wither. Wilter is not a word, but I think it could easily be mistaken for a form of "wilt".

I wholeheartedly agree. I immediately thought it was a "death song." Though you put it way more elegantly. :-)

I tried to add this as a reply to @meloncherry. I fail at internet. :-(

My analyzed interpretation 1a. You'll know~an inwards stirring or sensing,

1b. When's time to go on~ to go to victorious grounds that hasn't been achieved by anyone, so here, one is now standing at the end of the bridge to a new victory grounds,

2a. You'll really want to grow ~ as one baring the vision, that one is to bare more than just an external drive or motive, but to also bare an inwardly spiritual stirring that is beyond one's control, like a destiny and that combination will grand you the strength u need to

2b. and grow till tall ~ and by that you shall achieve reaching that great height [which is tall(marked height) meaning has been achieved],

Great height that which you once at the beginning, you would only see from a far distance, trend setters, whom are those who have gone before you, so grow now till you reach those height, but not have reach those tall height, but now that you have reached this great height(s) it doesn't set you to be different from greatness achiever, which is a record on its own, but it also categorises you with then, but driven for more because you have more in you, you are destined for that one price and through both the external and internal drive u have, u shall stand at the brim of that bridge or pinnacle of that mountain, where you are at 1b. At that time to go on, beyoond marked greatness or tall ness, as an illustration, like an athlete who have passed running everyone, but that doesn't make u a winner, which takes us to 3a

3a. They all ~ those who have set greatness or tall ness, or the other finalist athletes

3b. In the end, will fall, refering to the finalist athletes, will fall to fell to take the Gold, for you will finish 1st and take the Gold reaching heights enough that never been reach and such archive ness will make the for great height obsolete or they will becomes like nothing or like collapse heights, now ruins

So in conclusion, this song is an uplifting song till one grows enough to take the Gold,.in a race were one starts from the bottom, by passing all enough that look as if they have fallen.
