According To You Lyrics
According to you
I'm stupid,
I'm useless,
I can't do anything right.
According to you
I'm difficult,
hard to please,
forever changing my mind.
I'm a mess in a dress,
can't show up on time,
even if it would save my life.
According to you. According to you.
But according to him
I'm beautiful,
incredible,
he can't get me out of his head.
According to him
I'm funny,
irresistible,
everything he ever wanted.
Everything is opposite,
I don't feel like stopping it,
so baby tell me what I got to lose.
He's into me for everything I'm not,
according to you.
According to you
I'm boring,
I'm moody,
you can't take me any place.
According to you
I suck at telling jokes cause I always give it away.
I'm the girl with the worst attention span;
you're the boy who puts up with it.
According to you. According to you.
But according to him
I'm beautiful,
incredible,

He's into me for everything I'm not,
according to you.
I need to feel appreciated,
like I'm not hated. oh-- no--.
Why can't you see me through his eyes?
It's too bad you're making me decide.
According to me
you're stupid,
you're useless,
you can't do anything right.

I don't think she's talking about a past relationship. I think she's talking about what she thinks of herself.

my trouble with it, is that "Why can't you see me through his eyes? / It's too bad you're making me decide" seems to be about forcing a choice between "you" and "him" if "you" is a guy then it makes sense that she'd have to choose between "you" guy and "him" guy. if "you" is herself, however, then i'm not sure how that fits. why would it be "too bad" that she'd have to "decide" to let go of her poor self-esteem...

still, i liked your idea b/c i would like to think there's more to the song than the obvious interpretation of complaining to an underappreciative boyfriend. Thank you.

That was my interpretation of it also, I heard a bunch of girls being all "omg that's so like my ex!!!!11!", etc. But I applied it to myself and hey, it worked. =/

that could be ture, but she says "I'm the girl with the worst attention span, you're the boy who puts up with it." and if she was talking about herself, she would have just called herself a boy.

haha also when she says "according to me ur stupid ur useless u cant do anything right" she is stating what he says just vice vercus.

It's a nice enough song. Catchy, very sing-along...and even though it's not the most profound song out there, at least it means something.
I have one complaint, though. She shouldn't have ended the song with the first verse. That just makes it sound like she isn't over him yet, like she's still obsessed with how he sees her. That's just stupid. I mean, she's got this great guy who, apparently, thinks she's perfect. She should just forget what that jerk thought about her and move on to bigger and better things...and guys.
Or maybe she's just trying to emphasize the difference between the two of them. I don't know. It just feels...incomplete to me. Like there's more she should have--could have--said. Eh, whatever.
Oh, and thank you so much to lyrics.url.com for getting us the coorect lyrics. We are, like, forever in your debt. Hahahaha XD Priceless!
Personally, (and I dont think this has been said yet?) I dont interpret the song about a boyfriend. Perhaps its about her being a difficult teen to her parents, and in their anger, they say shes stupid or useless. When shes upset, she thinks about how they think shes annoying sometimes, but her boyfriend likes her for so many reasons.

the last verse emphasizes how he was soo wrong and everything about her new boyfriend is just her proof.

oooh burn! haha wen i first heard this song, i thought it was kind of depressing because this guy thinks so lowly of her, but when i heard the chorus, it was great:]
I find two things VERY interesting. That the writer(s) of this song decided not to switch the positions of the ending and the four lines before the third chorus. And also that he/she/they titled it "According to You" instead of "According to Him".
Maybe, even if she does dump him for the other guy, even if she does throw his insults back at him, in the end his verbal abuse will stay with her forever.
I don't think this song is about two guys I think it's about just one guy, that has changed in a relationship. When she says 'according to you' she's refferring to how he is now and when she says 'him' she's refferring to how he was in the past. When the relationship started he was perfect and seemed to really love her but over time his true colors began to show (everything is opposite, as the song says)
"He's into me for everything I'm not": I think she's saying that everything he said he loved her for was apparently a lie.
"Why can't you see me through his eyes it's too bad you're making me decide": Here I think she's saying why he can't see her the way he used to see her. And her 'decision' is between whether or not she's gonna stay with him or not.
I think the song ends with the first lyrics again because it's about the same guy (as I said before). She started out talking about how he is now, then started singing about how he used to be and now at the end she's back to seeing him as he really is now.
Just my interrpretation. Others probably don't see it like this...
Very fresh look on the song but don't you think the lyrics would be something like "I feel like rewinding it" rather than "I don't feel like stopping it"? Although you mentioned your interpretation of "too bad you're making me decide" that would actually be a weird line as well in my opinion.

I can relate to this song from a different perspective here.
To Clarify, I do believe that it's about a girl who is confused about whom to choose. Even though it seems like such a simple choice, notice she's still saying that he's making her decide.
The song is open to interpretation, whether it's about a girl whose talking about herself, or about a guy she's with or even a guy she's not officially with.
What's more important is the core message of being told "you're not enough, you're flawed" and being told "you're everything I want"
It relates to me because, my Last girlfriend was the sweetest girl in the world. And I used to be very bluntly honest with her. I used to tell her about how she did things wrong. I've called her situationally useless before, never stupid.
She liked me because I was honest with her, and I gave her a standard to work toward. I would tell her she was beautiful. I would tell her that she made me smile because she did. It was the good and the bad.
However, there just came a point where she just started dropping the ball. Again and again. She got lazy, superficial, and shallow. And I just wouldn't follow her into it.
I couldn't find a nice way to tell her that she was losing all the personal qualities that made her beautiful to me. Now she's with this guy who worships the ground she walks on.
A guy who quite literally thinks she's beautiful, incredible and can't stop thinking about her.
When I listened to the song it made me cry. Flat out. While I was driving.
It's a great song because it's open to interpretation. It's versatile but regardless of how it applies to you it means inspiring and positive.
To me, it touched home very hard because to me the song is about a girl who would rather be with some guy who will tell her anything she wants to hear than be with a guy who will tell her what he really feels.
In the end of the song she repeats about how "According to you, I'm useless and stupid" and I think that's the feeling of remembering that there was -something- right about being called useless and stupid (metaphorically, not literally) but it doesn't matter at that point.
Simultaneously, it's also about a girl who manages to find the confidence to choose the nice guy(positive perspective) over the jerk(negative perspective).
Ok, I have 2 different interpretations of this song 1* It's simply as she states, that there's this new guy (him) who thinks wonderfully of her as opposed to the other unappreciative guy(you)
2*She never actually states that she likes the new guy (him), she only brags to (you) about how (him) is in love with her - or perhaps, how she wants (you) to think of her. This leads me to believe that she doesn't really want to be with (him), she only wants (you) to see her as (him) does so that their relationship works. //Why can't you see me through his eyes?//
Another note, she says //It's too bad you're making me decide// I think this is a threat to (you), saying "i still want to be with (you), but if you don't change, i'll go with (him)"
Well, that's my piece right thur.. Whatcha think?
I love this song! It is very catchy, I have it stuck in my head.

this might not be right but i feel like she still loves/likes this old guy because why would she end with song with according to you... like she really lieks to hang with the new guy bc he thinks shes beautiful and perfect, but she still wants the guy who makes he feel like crap " Why can't you see me through his eyes? It's too bad you're making me decide." but then again she says too bad your making me decide meanings too bad for him shes not gonna pick him.
