Shawty's like a melody in my head
That I can't keep out, got me singin' like
Na-na-na-na, every day
It's like my iPod stuck on replay, replay-ay-ay-ay-ay
Shawty's like a melody in my head
That I can't keep out, got me singin' like (ayy)
Na-na-na-na, every day
It's like my iPod stuck on replay, (J.R.), replay
Remember the first time we met
You was at the mall wit' yo' friend
I was scared to approach ya, but then you came closer
Hopin' you would give me a chance
Who would have ever knew
That we would ever be more than friends?
We're real worldwide, breaking all the rules
She like a song played again and again
That girl like somethin' off a poster
That girl is a dime they say
That girl is a gun to my holster
And she's running through my mind all day, ayy
Shawty's like a melody in my head
That I can't keep out, got me singin' like (ayy)
Na-na-na-na, every day
It's like my iPod stuck on replay, replay-ay-ay-ay-ay
Shawty's like a melody in my head
That I can't keep out, got me singin' like (ayy)
Na-na-na-na, every day
It's like my iPod stuck on replay, replay-ay-ay-ay-ay
See you been all around the globe
Not once did you leave my mind
We talk on the phone, from night 'til the morn'
Girl, you really changed my life
Doin' things I never do
I'm in the kitchen cookin' things she likes
We're real worldwide, breaking all the rules
Someday I wanna make you my wife
That girl like somethin' off a poster
That girl is a dime they say (hey)
That girl is a gun to my holster
And she's running through my mind all day, ay
Shawty's like a melody in my head
That I can't keep out, got me singin' like (ayy)
Na-na-na-na, every day
It's like my iPod stuck on replay, replay-ay-ay-ay-ay (oh)
Shawty's like a melody in my head
That I can't keep out, got me singin' like (ayy)
Na-na-na-na, every day
It's like my iPod stuck on replay, replay-ay-ay-ay-ay
I can be your melody
Oh, girl, I could write you a symphony
The one that could fill your fantasies
So come, baby girl, let's sing with me, ayy
I can be your melody
Oh, girl, I could write you a symphony
The one that could fill your fantasies
So come, baby girl, let's sing with me, ayy
Na, na-na, na-na, na-na
Na-na, na-na, na-na

Na, na-na, na-na, na-na
Na-na, na-na, na-na

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

It means that this guy is scared to tell a girl how he is feeling then she makes the first move. Since that day he cant get her off his mind. Veryy good songg :)
Wow! I normally don't like songs like this but I heard it on the radio the other day and it was really catchy. Sounds like a guy that can't get this girl out of his head.
I can certainly relate to this song at the moment. I remember the first time I met this girl - great friends but to shy/uncertain as to whether or not I should say just how I feel. Then she took off overseas for a couple of years - hadn't seen her since, until just last night I ran into her in a club and I was certain at first if it was her - I looked a number of time in disbelieve. IT WAS HER THOUGH!! :D
I don't want to let her go back overseas this time without her knowing exactly how I feel. I just need to find the right time to do so.
After seeing her last night and then this morning having never heard this song before, it was on the front page of the iTunes store. Some would say fate would have it. Very confusing, somewhat surreal at the moment.
Lyrics should be:
"I can be your melody OH GIRL I can write you a symphony"
Makes more sense now, right? :)
I think that its...
"I can be your melody OR GIRL I can write you a symphony"
Because their not the same thing... OH GIRL doesnt really make sence
Oh girl makes sense. Or girl doesn't really make sense to me. Think about it. Being someone's melody or writing them a symphony aren't really comparable. One is a state of being while the other is an action.

This is such a great song. I love the lyrics. They speak to anyone guy that has a crush on a girl. I remember when this song first came out, this one boy in my class would always be singing it.
@iholland95 Haha It also applies to girls with crushes on guys... When I was younger, I had a huge crush on this guy and this was the song I chose to relate to.... He's gone now, so obviously it didn't work :)
