Out Of The Blue Lyrics
Somewhere along the way, my hopefulness turned to sadness,
Somewhere along the way, my sadness turned to bitterness,
Somewhere along the way, my bitterness turned to anger,
Somewhere along the way, my anger turned to vengeance.
And the ones that I made pay were never the ones who deserved it,
And the ones who deserved it, they'll never understand it,
Yes, I know I'm goin' to hell in a purple basket,
At least I'll be in another world while you're pissin' on my casket.
How could you be so perfect for me?
Why can't you ignore the things I did before?
Somewhere along the way, exacting vengeance gave excitement,
Somewhere along the way, that excitement turned to pleasure,
Somewhere along the way, that pleasure turned to madness,
Sooner or later that kind of madness turns into pain.
And the ones that I made pay were never the ones who deserved it,
Those who helped me along the way, I smacked them as I thanked them,
Yes, I know I'm goin' to hell in a leather jacket,
At least I'll be in another world while you're pissin' on my casket.
All that I can do is sing a song of faded glory,
All you got to do is sit there, look great, and make them horny.
Together we'll sing songs and tell exaggerated stories,
About the way we feel today in the night and in the morning.
How could you be so perfect for me?
Why can't you ignore the things I did before?
Take all your fears, pretend they're all true,
Take all your plans, pretend they fell through.
But that's what it's like,
That's what it's like for most people in this world.
Rich or the poor.
Muslims or Jews.
When roles are reversed.
Opinions are, too.
That's all I'm gonna say now.
Before you come knocking on my door now.

To me the song says life and this world are unpredictable and nothing will ever turn out the way you want it to. And it seems as though the beginning of the song he's talking about emotions he goes through when things don't turn out the way he wants. The chorus seems to be commenting on how sometimes things seem perfect but they don't work out (like in a relationship). Finally, the outro "take all your fears, pretend their all true..." seems to me like he realizes that some people have it worst off "that's what it's like for most people in this world" and that you need to just get over the fact that things don't always go the way you want.
Just my interpretation. Overall I think this is one of his best.
I think the song is telling us to not get angry because it only leads to pain to yourself and others. You may cause so much pain you could end up in Hell. The song doesn't mention what the person is so angry about but it can be so many things. The person in the song is also so angry and obsessed with exacting vengeance he loses the one he loves. He wants her to forget the things he did but it's not easy to forgive and forget.
In the last part of the song where Julian says: "Take all your fears, pretend they're all true Take all your plans, pretend they fell through. I think in short he is saying to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. For most people in the world that is the way we must live.
I think you are spot on with this one. I think there are 2 parts to this song, first is based on personal experience of the protagonist, or a story if you must, where the consequences of his action led to losing someone he loved. "And the ones that I made pay were never the ones who deserved it"

He is convinced that he will go to hell because of this, acknowledging his wrongs with a sense of pride and honesty, proudly equipped with a leather jacket. The moral of the story is to be patient, as patience is...
He is convinced that he will go to hell because of this, acknowledging his wrongs with a sense of pride and honesty, proudly equipped with a leather jacket. The moral of the story is to be patient, as patience is a virtue. Quite evident really in his website> lyric section where each song has its' own synopsis: Anger is weakness, patience is strength.
The second part is what you said it is, "hope for the best but prepare for the worst" where he attempts to preach this message to a wider & global audience. Political military actions will do nothing to convince them to switch sides, more so it will not change their beliefs. This is how the world works, albeit how inexplicable it is. And also forgive Julian in being not overly optimistic in his message, "That's all I'm gonna say now. Before THEY come knocking on my door now." Because power will always be in the government, ain't nothing gonna change that.
I hate to use this word, but gotta say this album is epic. Shows how he has matured as a lyricist. This album is truly phrazes for the young.
This song is amazing. I believe Jules has come up with his own interpretation about human relations. "Somewhere along the way" may be refering to the experience gained during his still short life... When we're young, we feel everything very intensely... The hopefulness, the bitterness, the anger, the sadness...
Revenge may seem sweet at the beginning, but the result often is against our intentions... We end up hurting the ones that we love the most (by drinking too much, using drugs, quiting school, having sex relations with different people, etc.), and those who we intended to hurt do not even notice our behavior, nor they even care that much...
I think the whole song talks about hopelessness and regret... Our friend Jules seemed to have matured! I've been a Strokes fan since their beginning, but this is by far the best lyrics i have read and enjoyed from Casablancas... Great, great song!
I completely agree!!! I Idolize You, check that song out by the Fabulous Wailers

Ah I love this song but I don't really think it's directed at not getting angry in particular... The anger was an effect, in the middle of things. Not the cause.
I feel like he's trying to say you can't be naive and live in hope because in the end everything goes bad.
The last part: "Rich or the poor. Muslims or Jews. When roles are reversed. Opinions are, too." I think that it is kind of saying that victims might be victims in this reality but if the power had of been in the other hands the victims would have been the persecutors and done exactly the same thing
great song
the start bit is dangerously similar to everything is happening so fast by mgmt
album of the year though

jaded and burnt out julian haha
The meaning isn't clear to me, he seems to have gone mad. Could be about a break up:
How could you be so perfect for me? Why can't you ignore the things I did before?
But in the later verses it sounds like it's political. In the last verse it sounds to me like he's saying:
When roles are reversed. Opinions are, doomed.
Anyway, strong lyrics and a great start of a great album.
The intro sounds almost exactly like Empire Of The Sun's song Half Mast. But no big deal. A good song is a good song none the less.
Great album... i wish he woulda saved 5 of these tracks for the strokes and made a killer album. hopefully they still will. Tracks 1,2,3,6,and 8 are awesome. The others are good too. but I just really like the uptempo stuff, like usual strokes.
I love how he tracks what turns in to what.. this song is awesome. And I like it.
Yes, I know I'm goin' to hell in a leather jacket, At least I'll be in another world while you're pissin' on my casket.
best part! Hell is kinda scary tho....
