This song is about a 2 cowboys from wild wild west having a duel for the love of a girl, Roter sand (red sand) goes for the blood in the sand of the protagonist
Now, I don't understand German all that well, so I'm going off a googlese translation here, but the chorus seems to imply that the duel was rigged against the protagonist by the woman he's fighting over.

This reminds me of a book I had to read at school. It's called Effi Briest by Thedor Fontane where a young woman falls in love with an interesting man (protagonist) though she is already married to another man. When he gets it, he wants to duel that rival and kills him at the beach. Hell of a boring book, but matches perfectly.
