This reminds me of a book I had to read at school. It's called Effi Briest by Thedor Fontane where a young woman falls in love with an interesting man (protagonist) though she is already married to another man. When he gets it, he wants to duel that rival and kills him at the beach. Hell of a boring book, but matches perfectly.
