The Way Home! Lyrics

The way home
Lined with all the things that you have learned.
The way home...
The lights are on, but we're still getting burned.
Show to me, The way I found the grey lines honed.

'Cause it's so hollow now
Show's over now

The way I'm
Lighting all the faces you have turned.
The way is high.
Glad to know the greatest thing I knew...
I always knew.

So hollow now
Show's over now...
And I've wasted time on daylight...
I won't be knocked down,

Show the way. (I've only time now)
I won't be shown the way home
I've always knew...

So hollow now
Show's over now
And I've wasted time on daylight, I'm sorry
And I've wasted time on daylight, I'm sorry

This song could be the antithesis of "Deadhead." While "Deadhead" might represent devotion to another as a means of achieving salvation from suffering, "The Way Home!" could symbolize liberation from suffering through the recognition of self. (Perhaps too introspective, as Devin has always been...)

"I'm returning to myself with everything I learned from my time with you. Even though we knew and learned from each other, we're still suffering, and I'm trying to understand how I arrived at my own conclusions about who I am—because I still feel empty and disillusioned with myself. I've faced my own feelings—the ones you tried to hide. It will be difficult to find peace within myself, but I know I will reach it. Emptiness. Disillusionment. I've wasted my time shining through you, my “Sun Goddess.” I will rise again. Forgive me, self."

Something like that. Or maybe I've overthought it too much.

Didn't he use the phrase "grey lines" before in Dead Head? Is there anything to that?

It actually refers to a line of trains in Vancouver.

Yes, there is some musical and lyrical reference to that part in Deadhead: "The grey line, the greyhound HOME"

Yeah, the line in deadhead is "Now the rain it comes, the rain it blurs the grey line ...the grey line...the Greyhound home".

I love that line so much, it conveys such a heavy sense of depression and movement in so few words. Anyone who ever took a long depressing bus trip home (or far away from home)can relate to this I think. And the reference definitely adds another layer to this song for me.

I love this song, and I love Devin's music so much. He just keeps getting better. I didn't think much of Addicted at first (loved the 1st track, hated Bend it Like Bender), but over a year later, I have this song (The Way Home) on repeat at the moment. So many of Dev's greatest tracks are 'growers' for me. It's like my brain is physically incapable of realising how good certain songs are for at least a year :p
