Question...
Leapt like dog from man...
Terminate high thinking...
Known in your prophecy...

Sun... Son...
Sun it shifts, and brittleness subsides
To sleep... sleep away

One comes, the rain will always be
And things I am
Are things that should not be
They laughed at me but we never bothered

My friends and I
There were no others

Now it comes...
Bolt across the blue...
Shadows dance over the land...
Walls high, water deep
Brick and steel gathering speed
Guess it's just a feeling
...Guess it's just a feeling...

Rain may come
The rain may never be

In things you are
Are things I need to be
My friends were there but they never bothered

Now there's you and I an
There are no others

It's like when death becomes musical
...It's musical
It's like a death becomes musical
Musical

And it comes...
To make sure that he will never rise
And the groans from the bellies
Have never cried this hard
And the eyes of the wicked ones
Have never been full of dust
In the middle of the sea it waits...
...Closer...

Home, nor anywhere on Earth on that final day will anyone be apart
...one...schooled...together...
Towards the sea...
And we may drown, fly, fall from faith
...but the pain won't be realized
Because the emotions will hit as god should
And the mountains will offer no shelter
And the clouds will be no cover...
No matter where we run...

Don't die on me
Don't go away
When I need you here
In my need

The rain will come
The rain will always be
In things I am
Are things that have to be
My friends have come and I never bothered

Myself and I
There is no other

It's like a death becomes musical
It's musical

    My Interpretation

This song convinced me that Devin has read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

"Myself and I There is no other"

Eckhart had this epiphany also through an extreme anxiety attack, almost not able to breath, saying "I can't live with myself! What? I and myself... maybe just one of them is real."

And thus he enlightened and years later began to teach people. Myself and I refers to your ego and the REAL you, the calm wise watcher behind it.

This song is absolutely amazing. It has a very slow build-up into an astonishing eargasm. If you have the patience, this is Devin's most rewarding song. Can't even begin to interpret the meaning, though.

I interpret the song as discussing death again and the feelings and meanings it has to everyone. It makes the statement that death is in the ocean, e.g. life. You cannot hide from death in a physical sense so 'mountains' will provide no safety and neither will 'clouds'. The ethereal inevitability of death will claim everyone and whether we 'drown, fly, or fall from faith' when we face it, is up to us.

The last parts of the song are more feelings of loss and mourning for people who have died. Missing our loved ones who have died. The musical bit of death is the cascade of emotion, highs and lows, that dealing with death brings to someone. Thus death is musical, both good and bad parts of it.

From SYL's Skin Me: "It's just a feeling I have It's like a feeling of death You can't be in it for the cash You must be in it for life And if your houes I need And if the payment is real And if your mind is at ease That is the death of music "

'One comes, the rain will always be And things I am Are things that should not be They laughed at me but we never bothered

My friends and I There were no others'

This bit seems to discuss when you're younger and we rely on our friends to get us through. When we're young we don't have a sense of who we truly are. The rain suggests things will always happen, bad things, good things, because life is musical, there's a beginning and an end. The next refrain sorta thing:

'Rain may come The rain may never be In things you are Are things I need to be My friends were there but they never bothered

Now there's you and I an There are no others'

This seems to deal with when you've met your significant other, and you realise the friends you thought you could rely on are gone-and you seem to focus on what you have now-which is your lover/husband/wife. The death of a friendship seemed to happen, almost musically.

'The rain will come The rain will always be In things I am Are things that have to be My friends have come and I never bothered

Myself and I There is no other'

This bit is when you realise that you can only ever trust yourself, only ever rely on yourself because you may have friends, you may have a lover but the one person you can count on is yourself.

The idea of music equalling emotion is hinted all the way through this song. Living is musical as things will always happen, things will always end.

I agree with Danny, it does seem to be a progression through life and the different events; I always got the feeling listening to this song though when he repeats 'never bothered' and 'there is no other' that there was some kind of missed oppertunity. You know I've heard that when Devin finished mixing this song, he hid under his desk because he was scared of it! I think I would be too though if I wrote something this deep

    My Interpretation

To me it seems to represent the bipolar disorder Devin was diagnosed with, in a way that no one will understand him (or them) except himself.

They laughed at me but we never bothered

He is happy just the way he is, even though people picked on him for having mental problems

In things you are Are things I need to be My friends were there but they never bothered

His friends knew of the troubled mind, but they still accepted him. Also, he also accepted it: what he is was also what his other personality is, because they share the body.

And it comes... To make sure that he will never rise

Maybe he finally was cured, and with the death of the problem, he made a song about it - thus musical.

Don't die on me Don't go away When I need you here In my need

Finally he discovers that he misses the other personality, perhaps as a source of confidence in friendship (within), and he feels lonesome with the other side gone.

My friends have come and I never bothered Myself and I There is no other

His friends finally had had enough of the mental problems and left him, before his curing? Now it's just himself alone.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
