A Light in a Darkened World Lyrics
I've seen so much corruption
And it's hard to endure
Living on greed and positions
Is this what we're dying for
Now choose this day
Who you will serve
To be the light
In the darkened world
Many are willing
To only live for themselves
Turning away from morality
Nothing can turn you now
Now choose this day
Who you will serve
To be the light
In a darkened world
You fail us all
And the waters beginning to rise
Become the light
In this darkened world
This is destiny
The choice is now defined
No more deception
Now days will charm
It's in your hand's
It's in your hand's
Now choose this day
Who you will serve
To be the light
In a darkened world
It's in your hand's (it's in your hand's)
It's in your hand's (your hand's)
Become the light
In this darkened world
And it's hard to endure
Living on greed and positions
Is this what we're dying for
Who you will serve
To be the light
In the darkened world
To only live for themselves
Turning away from morality
Nothing can turn you now
Who you will serve
To be the light
In a darkened world
And the waters beginning to rise
Become the light
In this darkened world
The choice is now defined
No more deception
Now days will charm
It's in your hand's
Who you will serve
To be the light
In a darkened world
It's in your hand's (your hand's)
Become the light
In this darkened world

From a church-going background, as most of KSE is, this song is even more plain in meaning.
"Now choose this day who you will serve To be the light in a darkened world"
This is a reference to a pair of passages from the sermon on the mount:
"Now choose this day who you will serve" is a reference to Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
The singer is asking which of these masters the audience will devote his life to, God or money.
"To be the light in a darkened world" is a simple reference to Jesus' analogy comparing Christians to light:
Matthew 5:14-16 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."
This is saying that Jesus' followers should thrive to to do good to everyone.
That's my take on it anyway.
exactly what i was thinking but i dont understand this lyric "You failed us all and the water's beginning to rise" but the main message is definately what you said

@ no BS: Just a guess here, but I think it's a reference to people before the Great Flood. All of mankind failed God (save for one family), and the waters began to rise.

Again, just a guess, but I think it fits.

The "choose this day who you will serve" line is a direct quotation from the old testament book of Joshua: "And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
This song talk about how the world is currupted and nasty and that we should try to change things (become a light in a darken world).
I think this song could be about numerous different situations. But overall, it's about how nowadays people have become so selfish and hung up on material objects. We've become so greedy and inconsiderate that everyday more and more people are forgetting what's most important and/or thinking less about others. Being the "light in this darkened world" would be living against these customs and serving as a role model to others.
As I said, I think it could represent multiple situations.. about the world as a whole and war. Or everyday life. Or activists or protesters for a good cause. etc.
Best song on the new album
I agree with Yoshanuikabundi, Howard Jones is from a christian backround and this song blatently speaks of biblical principles!
eh, fuck this song.
'a bid farewell' version 2.0
sounds just like it....
um..........EPIC
About the world, its corruption and moral neglect. We need to be resilient and we need to make our own difference. Advocating for us not to take part in the worlds mistakes and pities.
