Successful Lyrics
The money
The cars
The clothes
The hos
I suppose
Yeah
I want the money, money and the cars, cars and the clothes, The hos
I suppose
I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful
Drizzy!
Aww yeah Trey I fuckin' feel ya
They be staring at the money like it's unfamiliar
I get it, I live it, to me there's nothing realer
Just enough will solve your problems
Too much'll kill ya
And when I leave I always come right back here
The young spitter that everybody in rap fear
A lot of y'all are still sounding like last year
The game needs change and I'm the motherfucking cashier
Nickel for my thoughts, dimes in my bed
Quarters of the cush ate the lines in my head
Take my verses too serious you'll hate me
Cuz I'm the one to paint a vivid picture no HD
Yeah, I want it all that's why I strive for it
Dis me and you'll never hear a reply for it
Any award show or party I get fly for it
I know that it's coming I just hope that I'm alive for it
I want the money, money and the cars, cars and the clothes, The hos
I suppose
I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful
Yeah, I want things to go my way
But as of late a lot of shit been going sideways
And my mother tried to run away from home
But I left something in the car so I met her in the driveway
And she cried to me
So I cried too
And my stomach was soaking wet, she's only 5'2"
And 48 hours all before I showed up
And bought $1,000 worth of drinks and got poured up
Damn, my reality just set in
And even when the Phantom's leased them hos still wanna get in
I do a lot of things hoping I never have to fit in
So trying to keep up with my progress is like a dead end
My girl love me but fuck it, my heart beats slow
And right now the tour bus is looking like a freak show
And life changes for us every single week so
It's good but I know this ain't the peak though cuz I want the...
I want the money, money and the cars, cars and the clothes, The hos
I suppose
I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful
Alright well, uh, alright. Let me put this fucking cigarette out.
You know what it is, you know what you're doing is. Making it to the top, all the way to the top. You need to go for the money, and not the honeys, you know what I'm saying?
Wise words from a decent man
Back when I was trying to put a ring on Alicia's hand
This lost boy got fly without Peter Pan
And my delivery just got me buzzing like the pizza man
In person I am everything and more
I'm everywhere these other niggas never been before
But inside I'm treading water trying to steadily swim to shore
I'm on a shopping spree to get whatever is in stores
Yeah, just call me Shopping Bag Drizzy
Or call me Mr. Damn, He Ain't Coppin' That, Is He?
And fans of these freshman is about to get iffy
While this youngin that you doubted is about to get busy
I'ma kill it I promise this I know you're mad
I've always treated my city like some shoulder pads
The big homie use a flash if you must
And I swear I ain't asking for much all I want is the...
I want the money, money and the cars, cars and the clothes, The hos
I suppose
I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful
Yeah..it's like, I know what I gotta say I just don't know how to say it...to you
Pardon the swag but bitch it's Cart-ey
Long bread, I don't eat shortcake
How come I can't miss a woman like I can't miss court dates
Cheese, but she's not in this portrait
Yeah life's fine, but I don't portray
I'm on the other side, but it is a short gate
I don't want the glow, I want the glory
And I'ma fuck the world, but this is just foreplay
Tired of the bullshit, bring on the cow shit
Haven't met a smell that's stinkier than owl shit
And that's word to Toronto
So high up I got birds in the condo
Ain't that a female dog
Asked her who I am to her and she said God
Weezy baby I go real hard
No further details, boy.

instantly noticeable and noteworthy: the relationship between the lyrics and the musical tone. Normally a song with the subject matter of "Successful"s hook would have a danceable club beat -- something to get amped up to -- but here, both the beat and the melody are mournful, as are the vocal deliveries. And normally, the approach to the material-success driven rap/hiphop/r&b is "fake it til you make it" -- if you ain't already got it, rent out a yacht, a big house, some flashy cars, and pretend you do. but this song doesn't talk about what they do have, or even what they're going to have, but what they "wanna" have, what they wish they had. even weezy's verse expresses dissatisfaction: "i'm on the other side, but it's a short gate". could that gate be hopped? could it all be taken from him, just like that? "I want the glory" implies he still doesn't feel the glory, despite all his money and fame; "I'm tired of the bullshit", he's getting fed up.
This is a dirge, a death of the dream -- we've wanted these things for so long, we don't know how to not want them. will they even satisfy, if grasped? what do we do now?
forgot one thing: the "i suppose" at the end of the first time through the hook displays the same lack of passion for this endless, empty dream. he's goin through the motions, but at the same time, he's not even sure.

My friends and I have had many arguments about the meaning of this song . I believe he is trying to say yes he has the money, the cars, the nice things and the "hos" but all he really wants to be is sucessful. He is trying to let people know that he has the material things but all he really wanted out of this life was for people to know his name and make something sucessful out of his .

Though, my friends tend to think that he is trying to say your not going to make it in life without all the things he talks about. They think he is sending the message saying if you don't have the money, the cars, the clothes, the hoes then you are not successful.
By listening to the song you can see both point of views but its just the complicted fact of whose wrong and whose right . Do you think you can help me out with this argument ?
so, does anyone know what it was that Drake left in his car, when he caught his mom in the driveway?
I think that when Drake says "I get it, I live it, to me there's nothings realer", he is saying that to him, there is nothing else that he would rather do because he knows he's got it good.
Songs mean something different to every listener; however, here is Drake's explanation....
Drake wrote the bulk of the lyrics after Trey Songz came up with the hook. In an interview with Complex Blog, Drake explains: "It's basically a story. It starts in January 2008 when I was kinda confused like, What am I really doing? I gave up acting all together to really do this music thing, and I was really truly confused. It's way different than acting, there aren't people to depend on, you really have to build your own thing basically from the ground up, you know, so in January not only was I confused about my career, I was also in a very destructive sort of us exhausting relationship with a female and it was just a bad headspace for me to be in. So that's where the tape starts. I just felt that nothing was ever good enough, and she was always searching for more excitement and then we move into “Successful.” I say at the end of the song, “There are so many things I want to say but I just don't know how to say it to you.” I know exactly what I want to say, you know, I just want to be successful, but I don't know if I can do it with you and then it goes into “Let's Call It Off,” which is the breakup."
Songz told MTV News about his involvement in the song "Drake told me back in January he was gonna do another mixtape. At first, he was calling me about interludes and trying to segue his singing into his rapping. That didn't work out, because we couldn't come to terms about what records I was going to be on. Then he sent me this track one night. I was in the studio when he sent it. He said, 'Let me know what you think about it.' It was simplistic, but it knocks. It's eerie, it's dark. The first thing I laid down was the gothic, reverb-driven harmony: 'arrrgh, arrrgh, arrrgh.' I couldn't think of what I wanted to hear on it, so I did a whole bunch of harmonies."
Songz then came up with the hook: He remembered: "The first thing that came to mind was 'I want the money, money and the cars/ Cars and the clothes/ The ho's/ I suppose I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful.' When I'm saying all that, conceptually for me, the deepest part of the record was when I say, 'I suppose.' I supposed that's what success is about. That's what [we're] led to believe."
Drake recalled: "I opened it up in my e-mail, and I heard this hook, and it was so powerful to me, because he says all these things: 'I want the money, money and the cars.' And it's like, it's almost like it made me feel like it may not be right what I want, you know? All these things, it's like it made me feel young. It kind of made me feel ignorant to the game. But it was an exciting record even though the tempo is slow. That's what I want. That's what I've been told is success: 'The money, the cars, the clothes and the ho's. I suppose.' The 'I suppose' moment in there is like, it's almost like you're doubting yourself for a second. But at the end of the day, I just want to be successful. So that's what the record meant to me."
Drake explained to MTV News the lyric, "My mother tried to run away from home, but I left something in the car, so I caught her in the driveway. And she cried to me, so I cried too/ And my stomach was soaking wet, she's only 5'2." He said: "When I was going through the creative process for So Far Gone, I was actually at a pretty dark place in my life. It was a frustrating time for my family, because my grandmother – who is now in her mid- to late 90s – was just losing it. It was hard for my mother to watch. And it was just, it was really at a point where it was like, 'Is this rap thing going to work?' Like, 'Is this my choice? Is this what I am committing to?' Money was an issue. Degrassi [which Drake starred on as a teen] had ended years ago, and we were just all kind of trying to figure stuff out. So my mother was going through a rough time. And yeah, man, one night she just broke down and tried to actually run away from the house, tried to leave it all behind. It was just a lot going on, and she never would have really left. She would've always come back, but it was just a frustrating moment for her. So I had forgot something in my car, and I came outside and I saw bags sitting by her car. I saw her out there, and she just started crying right away when she saw me. Anyway, I don't wanna get too emotional, but I had to hug her. My father doesn't stay with us, so I had to be security for her and just let her know that everything is going to be all right."
i love how trey says 'sussessfo'. LMAO
That's not how you spell Kush. It starts with a K not a C. Like he said in the song you really cant take what hes saying to seriously, because he knows he would be nowhere without all this success the music industry has given him. But I do really love this song, its a great song to go jogging to. Trey Songz has an amazing voice so does Drake.
What is Success? How do you define success? To different people, the word successful has different meanings. Both artists, show evidence that to them, life is all about getting the money, shown in lines 1-11. In this song Drake implies that without the music industry, he might not be successful. In Drake's verse, "so tryin' to keep up with my progress is like a dead end," is a line used which represents that he might not be able to move forward, where he doesn't get anywhere because he keeps running into walls, which means he has to backtrack and start over . Maybe because he messed up and made a mistake, so now he has to get back on the right path. Most of all, this song says that even to get to success, sometimes you have to go through a few mistakes. This song sends the message of do whatever you need to, to become successful. No matter if it means taking the biggest risks in life. At the end, you'll come out successful, with or without supporters.
Yeah . This song is about what Drake wants for himself . He isn't acting anymore & from here on out it's up to him to be the best he could be . But , I feel he could be scared in a way because he said "But as of late a lot of shit been going sideways" . Things aren't happening as he expected && when he says "Any awards show or party I get fly for it , I know that it's comin' I just hope that I'm alive for it" he knows that tomorrow is never promised So Yeah . idk if this line are in the lyrics above , but in the other successful version, they are.
But i love this song & Drake . i never thought he would blow up the way he did , but he did :). Also, i didn't really understand when he said "And my mother tried to run away from home But I left something in the car so I met her in the driveway And she cried to me So I cried too And my stomach was soaking wet, she's only 5'2" why would she be crying? Was it because he was leaving for good , to start his career? I'm Confused .
Does anyone know? Anyway, this song is amazing ,& it shows how deep Drake can really be. x
According to Drake who did an interview for MTV (I think it was for MTV) he talked about that part of the song where his mom was leaving. One night his mom was having a tough time, became pretty upset, and tried to leave. We arent sure whether or not she was actually leaving for good but Drake went out and talked to her and tried to comfort her, etc. I dont have the link to the interview, but there are a bunch of interviews with drake all over youtube.

Drake's done it again. Another song I'm addcited to. I just wanna be successful. Great song, easy to relate to.
This song was makes you think of your own personal meaning of success. Do you picture success as money and possessions or as strong relationships and making people happy. The song makes you question your interpretation. It is worth ruining your relationships for money and power? "Just enough will solve your problems, Too much'll kill ya" - Do you really need that much money? In the famous words of Biggie Smalls, "Mo money, mo problems". In reality, this is true. If you have all the money in the world but you cant build a strong relationship, you have nothing. "My girl love me but fuck it, my heart beats slow" - If you are more focused on money what is love worth to you? Can you still even feel love? "I'm everywhere these other niggas never been before, But inside I'm treading water trying to steadily swim to shore" - If you have everything you've every dreamed of, it still doesnt solve all of your emotional and family problems. Sometimes wealth can make you greedy and play with your emotions.
Now my personal oppinion: This song moves me. It makes me feel like I can do anything, but it makes me want to make a difference in people's lives at the same time. If I can have a career that changes lives while I still earn money is amazing. This song tells me to do what makes me happy and not to crush anyone to advance myself. ALSO: What the F*** is Lil Wayne doing in this song. I personally feel as though he blemished it with his verse at the end. Why is he talking about God damn owl shit.
Thanks for reading. Please reply.
I agree with joeshmo. You said it all. Kudos.

In all honesty I disagree completely. I think the entire song hinges on the way we interpret "owl shit" and how stinky it is. Could it be female sexual discharge? Cocaine? Pure unadulterated success juice? weezy4life bitch
