New Divide Lyrics
To me, this song is about a relationship, whether it be a friendship or something more, that has recently fallen apart. The beginning of the song describes the initial downfall, and how the other person seems to think that the rift between them is the speaker's fault (And your voice was all I heard that I get what I deserve). In the chorus I feel like the speaker is asking the other person to give him/her a reason to keep this relationship alive, when really the passion of the music shows that he/she wants desperately to keep the relationship intact. To me it's almost like the speaker is begging the other person to realize that there are reasons to stay together, and I feel as though he/she never does...
That's probably the most sense anyone's said about this song, everybody else just talks about how great or suckish the song is or about the movie, that's not what this site is about. Short, simple, and straight to the point. Most music deals with relationships, and that can be just about anything, a relationship doesn't have to deal with just human relationships and emotions. With that said, your interpretation hits closest to home for me... it makes it more official for me. For that, I rate your your comment positive.

The song isn't a chick flick... None of Linkin Park's songs have to do with "relationships" with another person.

The way you use the word "relationship" is broad. However I believe that you intended to imply that he was a lover of another person. Which is incorrect. But in the song he is reminiscing on a past event where a person said to him "That you get what you deserve", and his response to the event he remembered was "SO GIVE ME REASON, TO PROVE ME WRONG". Because the person was not giving a reasonable explanation as of why he was wrong. Just that he was wrong about whatever they were arguing about.
This argument could have been with anybody.
He realized that the relationship isn't working. Things have gotten awkward and he feels like she is being distant towards him. He wants to be around her, but it seems as if she just doesn't want to. Because it's hard for him, he has chosen to leave her behind, but he feels bad about the whole thing. He wants her to prove him wrong, to prove that she DOES care about him. This song is about unreachability between two people.

--- Quoting this comment. I agree with this AGAIN. Given the "unreachability" / "space"...

So give me reason to prove me wrong, to wash this memory clean -- one is asking a reason provided that there is something happened from the past..
Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes ...that made her / him aloof from the other. or established an invisible barrier to the other. or a strong forcefield was being put on around him or her...
Give me reason to fill this hole, connect the space between ...one asking for one enough reason that they could stay with each other given the distance / unreachability, or a third person involved might be...
Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies across this new divide ...enough reason for the "relationship" to continue / ignite for real...
Across this new divide, across this new divide ...across this new journey, new phase.
To me, the song was about aliens - greater beings in outer space who are coming to Earth. They are asking us, people, to show them why they should save Earth, why they shouldn't just destroy all of humanity because we have ruined the planet and give the planet a chance to start over without our wars, pollution, and all of the mistakes we keep making. The song for the most part seems to come from the point of view of the humans:
I remembered black skies / The lightning all around me
- These greater beings who have our fate in their hands have come and apocalypse seems unavoidable.
I remembered each flash / As time began to blur
- Time seems to slow down as we look back on all of the mistakes we made now that we're finally facing destruction
Like a startling sign / That fate had finally found me
- Same as above, we realize that we finally have to pay for all of our mistakes on Earth
And your voice was all I heard / That I get what I deserve
- These aliens/robots/whatever who are about to wipe us off the face of the planet to let Earth regrow before we ruined it are telling us that we should have seen this coming and that we deserve this after all we've done
So give me reason To prove me wrong
- They're asking us to prove them wrong, to prove to them that we are worthy of surviving. Perhaps they wish there was another way, but need for us to prove it so that they can justify saving us.
To wash this memory clean
- They're asking us to prove to them once and for all that they can forget about our mistakes and that we won't make them again.
Let the thoughts cross The distance in your eyes
- The distance between us - clueless, cruel people and them, who have decided that we only bring destruction to everything we touch.
Give me reason To fill this hole Connect the space between
- They want us to show them that we aren't as different as we've been acting this whole time.
Let it fill up to reach the truth and lies Across this new divide
- The new divide that's visible between the ones who have come to bring justice to the planet and the humans who are realizing that we are now accountable for our actions.
There was nothing inside / The memories left abandoned There was nowhere to hide / The ashes fell like snow
- We can't hide anymore, we have to be accountable for what we've done and the pain we've caused.
etc etc
Now it might be from 'Their' point of view, talking to us:
And every loss and every lie
- All the lies we've made and things we've destroyed on Earth And every truth that you deny
- All of our denial for the havoc we've caused on the planet And each regret and each goodbye
- Every regret we've had too late Was a mistake too great to hide
- Humanity can't sweep all of its mistakes under the carpet
And your voice was all I heard But I get what I deserve
- We finally realize that we aren't good enough to stay here, that we can't prove anything to the ones who have come to destroy us, that we really are as bad as they think.
The planet's fine. It's gone through shit way worse then us. Solar Storms, Meteor attacks, and the list goes on. The PLANET is fine. THE PEOPLE are fucked. What we're doing isnt even affecting the planet, we just wanna think so. =/

I never thought the song could be considered this way, and thank you for your interpretation, it gives to me a bit of a new meaning to it.

As with most songs, I feel music is supposed to be left open to interpretation... to mean what it needs to mean to the individual listening to it. Having said that, here is what it means to me...
Its a very personal song to me... a rift or divide between two people. One person is looking back at the bad memories... the chaos of their past and decides to separate themselves from the other person. The other person becomes angry at this... even though the situations may have been bad... "give me reason, prove me wrong, wash this memory clean..." Its like, 'if you don't think this divide is a good idea... tell me why' the only response they can muster in their resentment is... "You'll get what you deserve."
"Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies, Across this new divide" He just wants to move forward either fixing the problems or starting fresh.
How does this apply to the movie? I have no idea...and maybe I'm completely wrong but... I intend on seeing the movie soon and finding out.
I hope someone gets something from my interpretation...
Ok guys just finished the reading the novel adaptation of the new TF movie that this song was written for. Once you see the movie or read the book alot of the song, (i.e. the versuses will make sense) the chorus is still little ify still trying the figure those out. But most of the soundtrack for the new movie, from what I understand, will be done by LP.

Disclaimer
Basically...I'm copying how I feel about the words in this song from a letter I am writing to some one. As soon as I listened to it, I knew there were some deeply personal connections for me. I had to take some time to really think about this. I copied pretty close to word for word what I wrote in the letter...it's deeply personal, however I feel safe posting because there aren't any details in it.
When I think of fate finally finding me, I feel that the results of how we have spent the last 7 years have finally caught up to me. That I screwed things up pretty bad…and now I have reaped what I have sown. The next part…I hear your voice and my own…telling me that I’m getting what I deserved, both for how I didn’t do so many things I needed to do in our relationship, and for how I hurt you.
The next line…I wish I was wrong, I wish I had a reason to believe I am wrong about how messed up we are. I wish in some ways that I could wash the memory clean. I’m not saying I don’t want to remember you. I just wish I could be free of thinking so often about all of the disaster we have encountered together.
Skipping a line…everything that has happened has created a huge hole, a huge gap between us. Somewhere between how we started and where we ended up, a huge chasm has emerged between us. The whole next paragraph of the song elaborates on this. All that’s left of what we had is memories…and ashes. Sometimes it feels like the ground caved in unexpectedly…we just didn’t see it coming. We didn’t see the damage being done over the years as clearly as we could have.
Skipping to the last verse…this one is a little more painful. I’ve heard you lie to me so many times and you’ve had years to change that. Now that I have known about many things that happened for months, you don’t deny it anymore. Before I knew the truth, you denied it all though. I just wanted to hear it from you, but I had to find out myself. It hurts that much more because of that.
End of my "personal interpretation" or whatever you'd like to call it. Please feel free to question\comment on anything I've said. I just wanted to share
What I'm hearing is trouble between two lovers or previous lovers. The scenery as described by black skies, lightning, ashes and the earth splitting open are not physical realities, but emotional from the problems between them.
Now taking it from that angle, it sounds like he's talking to hear and blaming her of various things instead of pointing the finger at himself, but her response is hey this is what you get, as if he did something wrong that he will not admit.
I'll take it by lines... *** is my meaning.
I remembered black skies / the lightning all around me I remembered each flash / as time began to blur Like a startling sign / that fate had finally found me *** emotional turmoil.
And your voice was all I heard That I get what I deserve *** he's being blamed
So give me reason / to prove me wrong / to wash this memory clean if you play out the song where he lays blame, it seems this line asks for a way to start again as if he wants to restore things if she changes
Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes Give me reason / to fill this hole / connect the space between Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies Across this new divide *** again can we restore things and bring us together
There was nothing in sight / but memories left abandoned painful conflicts between them is what he remembers it's not something he wants to dwell on so leave them behind or maybe the bad stuff has caused them to leave behind all the good memories in the dust in place of these bad memories
There was nowhere to hide / the ashes fell like snow And the ground caved in / between where we were standing And your voice was all I heard That I get what I deserve
So give me reason / to prove me wrong / to wash this memory clean Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes Across this new divide
In every loss / in every lie In every truth that you'd deny And each regret / and each goodbye was a mistake to great to hide here are your faults that drove me away "you" is direct reference to her
And your voice was all I heard That I get what I deserve *** your bad reason
So give me reason / to prove me wrong / to wash this memory clean Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes Give me reason / to fill this hole / connect the space between Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies Across this new divide
That's just my angle on it. Guy has girl problems and wants a want to undo it all if possible. Ain't it the truth? Give us a break, ladies!
yeah right lykos, give you guys a break. while you guys say the line.... "what can we do now, eh? these pretty ladies are all-over us".
yeah right lykos, give you guys a break. while you guys say the line.... "what can we do now, eh? these pretty ladies are all-over us".
he's apparently singing about himself being in the middle of a world of conflict, could be with someone, some belief, we don't know. (I remembered black skies / the lightning all around me)
there's been specific events that he remembers, and they all seem to mesh into one as time continued on (I remembered each flash / as time began to blur)
he had finally been awoken from the trance he was in. (Like a startling sign / that fate had finally found me)
there's some figure on the other side of this conflict, opposing him, accusing him for whatever reason. (And your voice was all I heard That I get what I deserve)
according to the conflict, anything that he could have/did hold dear were abandoned and destroyed (There was nothing in sight / but memories left abandoned)
The damage had been dealt. no one to blame his actions on. ashes symbolizing a volcano erupting, the climax of the situation had been reached. and now he's experiencing the fall-out. (There was nowhere to hide / the ashes fell like snow)
the official divide had been made. no more conflict. just a barrier between beliefs of him and his aggressor/opponent/conflictor (And the ground caved in / between where we were standing)
now that the divide had been made, he questions why he should change/conform his ways/belief to the other side's and to fill the divide that has separated them. (So give me reason / to prove me wrong / to wash this memory clean Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes Across this new divide)
he pretty much makes his defense for himself for why he stays on his side of the issue here. this stanza is probably the greatest arguement whether it is another one of LP's break-up songs or not (In every loss / in every lie In every truth that you'd deny And each regret / and each goodbye was a mistake to great to hide And your voice was all I heard That I get what I deserve)
once again he asks why he should fill the gap that was made. which is also the main chorus (So give me reason / to prove me wrong / to wash this memory clean Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes Give me reason / to fill this hole / connect the space between Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies Across this new divide )
i hope this helped someone.

to me, the song is about how he has been betrayed by somebody, whether it be a friend or girl friend. the first stanza is about him feeling like his world is coming down on him; everything collapsing around him because of this person. but he loves this person, and wants to give them another chance, so he tells them to give him a reason to prove himself wrong of his views on his sinner, and to wash his memory clean of the wrong doing that was done to him. when he talks about the floods across the distance of their eyes, he wants to see some sort of remorse, he wants to see if the person is sorry for what they have done. it is a recurring theme, and i dont want to sound reduntant by spelling out the rest of the song... if you liked my interpretation, please email me. im interested in what you thought ~wherehowz@yahoo.com~
I strongly agree; that is, at some point, my interpretation of the song as well.

It's a song about someone , laying in a hospital bed, the devil and black skies, all around him, the lightening of Satan's energy, his aura, is flashing all around this poor, helpless mortal, and he reaches out for help, from his fellow humans, and all he hears is, 'you get what you deserve'.
"I remembered black skies, the lightning all around me
*the lightening flashing all around me, as I lay, dying.
I remembered each flash as time began to blur
Like a startling sign that fate had finally found me
**Satan had found me, tried to kill me
And your voice was all I heard that I get what I deserve
So give me reason to prove me wrong, to wash this memory clean
So give me reason, and prove me wrong, that what I'm saying is not true here.
Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes
let me see, you cry floods of tears, to say you're sorry
Give me reason to fill this hole, connect the space between
***give me a reason, to forgive you, read between the lines.
Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies across this new divide" ***Be contrite enough, so that you can come to see, the truth of what is really going on.
but what is the video about? It' about the movie Transformers, an alien invasion, and OPtimus Prime, the leader of the aliens trying to help the Earth, Optimus Prime being struck down, and killed, like Christ, and being ressurrected.

And you all love music, because you crave to feel the emotion of life, but what you feel is the emotions, not of one man, but the collective emotions of 7 billion humans, who will either be enslaved by horrendous beings, or liberated.

let's look at the video, you see the robots, watching the person singing the song, in infrared, like they are spying on him in infrared, but what do they really see? What do the robots really understand, about what they are seeing?
great song love it!
