Alms Alms Lyrics

Beggar Woman

Alms, alms for a miserable woman!
On a miserable chilly morning
Thank ya, sir thank ya

Antony (spoken)

Mam, could you tell me who's house this is?

Beggar Woman (spoken)

That? That's the great Judge Turpin's house, that is.

Antony (spoken)

And the young lady who resides there?

Beggar Woman (spoken)

Oh her? That' Johanna, his pretty little ward...
Keeps her snug he does. All locked up.
So don't you go trespassin' there or it's a good whipping for you
or any other young man with mischief on his mind!
(sung)
How would ya like a little muff dear
A little jig jig. A little bounce around the bush.
Wouldja like to push me parsley? It looks to me dear that you got plenty there to push.
Alms! Alms! For a desperate woman!

She is traumatized by judge Turpin and thinks Anthony will go through the same thing if he "Ganders" at Johanna. She knows Judge Turpin only wants young people, such as herself and Johanna and is just a sexual predator

I'm not entirely sure, but when I read the lyrics to the beggar woman's little crazy jig near the end of the song (How'd you like a little muff dear ... you got plenty there to push), it occurred to me that she was offering her body to Antony. Anyone want to confirm my suspicions? Or explain the purpose of that verse.

My Interpretation

Yeah, she's offering herself to him.. I have no clue why it's in there, but that's what she's doing.

the spoken bits are pretty self explanatory, but she is trying to offer herself to Anthony, because after judge Turpin raped her, she was traumatized into thinking that all any man wants is sex, and rather then put up a fight, she just offers it out. your welcome ;)
