German Motor Car Lyrics

Well it sure felt nice getting ripped apart
In that junked out German motor car
I've got you

Well the robots cleaned at alarming speed
All the bedroom sheets and TV screen
Without you

I haven't a thing to do no more
This is how you ditch someone who drives you mad

Well I struggled and swam through a panicked sea
Had a backyard game and I dressed in green
And I had you

So I never had the blues, not me
This is how you ditch someone who drives you mad
So I will sit right down and stare at the wall
And pray that you are nothing like your photo at all
I will sit right down and stare at the wall
And pray that you are nothing like your photo at all

Well it sure felt nice getting ripped apart
In that junked out German motor car
I've got you

So I never had the blues, not me
This is how you ditch someone who drives you mad
So I will sit right down and stare at the wall
And pray that you are nothing like your photo at all
I will sit right down and stare at the wall
And pray that you are nothing like your photo at all
Pray that you are nothing like your photo at all
Pray that you are nothing like your photo at all

IMO, I think the car is a metaphor.. there was no crash or accident, the car is symbolic of how the narrator was "driven" mad by their ex. Why else would he say "it sure felt nice getting ripped apart in that junked out German motor car"? That's taken from the perspective of the victim of the "accident", who obviously wouldn't be around if this were a literal meaning.

Also, as many are probably aware, German cars are known for their luxury. The fact that he describes the car as "junked out" probably means a once great thing has turned sour. To me, this song is about a bad break-up.

Actually, during the period of East/West Germany, East German cars were garbage. Extremely unsafe if you were to get into an accident.

I agree a little more with unshady. I don't think the "person who drives you mad" doesn't mean someone who makes you angry, but someone that you're crazy for. I think he's regretting messing things up (his fault, not necessarily because it went bad, but because he thought he wanted something else) with a girl he was crazy for and is feeling tons of remorse.

Some of this song, he is simply longing for her to be at his side (I've got you/I had you), while at other times he is just in denial of his unhappiness (So I've never had the blues). Despite all that, he's realizing how things have moved on (Well the robots cleaned at alarming speed/ All the bedroom sheets and TV screen/ Without you / I haven't a thing to do no more).

Lastly, I will sit right down and stare at the wall And pray that you are nothing like your photo at all

He's trying to convince himself that she wasn't all that he remembers she is (though he knows she probably was and is).

I think that this song is about losing someone in a car crash. It's pretty clear through most of the song, but I can't seem to make sense of "This is how you ditch someone who drives you mad..." I think it might be part of the guilt in that this wasn't a person he was getting along with. Maybe it was a romance that was going sour... and then he lost her. When he sings "I pray that you are nothing like your photo at all," I imagine a photograph of her at the scene, dead. It reminds me a lot of the "Porsche Girl" who had graphic pictures of her death scene (in a german car) posted online.

Song Meaning

The narrator hit a stranger in his German motor car. It's sarcasm when he says it felt nice. I've got you is kinda like saying, well I'm alive but I got you. He sits and stares at the photo to try and forget or "ditch" someone who makes you mad(he's traumatized from killing someone.)

oh and the photo is on the wall is what I would imagine to be a newspaper cut out pinned up of the accident and a picture of the victim.

I think that it was something that he knew, not a stranger. Otherwise lyrics like "All the bedroom sheets and TV screen Without you" and "I haven't a thing to do no more" are a bit out of place. I think that "I've got you" is kind of a wishful thinking where he could save her.
