I agree a little more with unshady. I don't think the "person who drives you mad" doesn't mean someone who makes you angry, but someone that you're crazy for. I think he's regretting messing things up (his fault, not necessarily because it went bad, but because he thought he wanted something else) with a girl he was crazy for and is feeling tons of remorse.
Some of this song, he is simply longing for her to be at his side (I've got you/I had you), while at other times he is just in denial of his unhappiness (So I've never had the blues). Despite all that, he's realizing how things have moved on (Well the robots cleaned at alarming speed/ All the bedroom sheets and TV screen/ Without you / I haven't a thing to do no more).
Lastly,

And pray that you are nothing like your photo at all
He's trying to convince himself that she wasn't all that he remembers she is (though he knows she probably was and is).
