I loved the original of this song (The Thief), and thought it couldn't get much better. But Relient K proved me wrong. I think this song is about a girl that he lost. The theif he thought was another guy. But really it was him at lost her all along. Beasty awesome lyrics.

I don't think thats right actually. I haven't done any research on his motives for writing, but every time i have fallen from Jesus, Satan was the thief. I think anybody could easily point their finger there. Great song regardless.

Matthew Thiessen the lead singer of Relient K IS the lead singer of Matthew Thiessen and the Earthquakes (Which is a side project or something..) thats why its so good, he just had this song added to the new album The Bird and the Bee Sides.

I absolutely love this song. I'm surprised I didn't comment this one when I got the album when it first came out since I commented all those ones...

anyway, I've never heard The Thief, I don't think, but I love this one. I think it can go either way; about a girl or Jesus depending on your situation. Sometimes it just depends if I'm in the worship mood (that's a bad way to word it, but I think you know what I'm saying) or if I'm just listening to my playlist while doing work. : )

I don't think this is about Jesus. The line "I guess it's safe to say you're never coming back." makes me come to that conclusion. Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you.

there has been a lot of songs relient k has done that seem like they are about a girl but if you really read the lyrics theyre about jesus. For example Be my escape, i need you, the best thing, up and up, and a lot more.

There is a problem with the song being about "losing" Jesus or being distracted for that matter. Likwid Cid was right on this matter, Jesus won't forsake you, and the song is all about being forsaken: "you're never coming back." Jesus will always come back. Written alternatively as, "Jesus will never never come back." So, that is strik one against Jesus theory.

Secondly, "I can't see you Getting used to Living in the midst of your perfection" Jesus not getting used to His own perfection? His own powerful, glorious, brilliant perfection?... and He can't get used to it? That makes me think it is about- not a girl,- but another close friend. Another beautiful human being who had all the qualities that the speaker loved, but got envious of. He call them "better then me" and this was the cause of "pushing them [you] away".
