So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
another day of rattling souls
hanging over your head
so you bought a crucifix
smeared across your breast
a dozen red rabbits-feet
hanging around your neck
so you bought a crucifix
smeared across your breast
i saw the devil in your eyes last night, and it scared me half to death
it's hard to think about haunting you, knowing you're possessed
man who makes you sick,
floats along on angels' wings
man who makes you sick,
floats along on angels' wings
man who makes you sick,
floats along on angels' wings
man who makes you sick,
floats along on angels' wings
if i bought you an elephant, would you ride it around?
if i bought you a cross to hang on, girl, would you burn it down?
if i told you i loved you, would you still kick me out?
if i told you you're beautiful, can i finish in your mouth?

I need a lot of help with this one! Please let me know..... I spent about two hours trying to figure out the main verse but I could not do it.
isn't there a part that goes "i saw the devil in your eyes last night, and it scared me half to death" and then something else before the angel's wings part
and the next verse sounds to me like: "if i bought(find?) you an elephant, would you ride it around? if i bought/find you a cross to hang on, girl, would you burn it down? if i told you i loved you, would you still kick me out?" i dont know the last part though, perhaps something about a fish in your mouth
also, i always thought "another great -------" was "a thousand red rabbit's feet hanging around your neck"
but that's just what i hear when i listen to it haha
Wowowowo nice
Made some corrections, thanks so much tickface. These seem essentially complete, and I think they're mostly correct too. I'm still not sure if they're singing "Who are you?" at the end.
Actually, I'm going to remove that part. I don't think they're singing that at all. It could very well be gibberish.
Nothing about a fish... it is:
"If I told you you're beautiful, could I finish in your mouth"
Tanya's right. No boats and fish. "If I told you you're beautiful can I finish in your mouth?"
That's MUCH more awesome.
