March To The Shore

You might find it rather unlikely, but when I heard the song for the first time I thought it greatly reflected the situation I had been in back then - so don't blame me if my interpretation is kinda wrong, I just couldn't help to fit myself in the lyrics :)

I guess it's about the relationship in which everything seems to be not right, but then comes the time in which everything has to be stated loud and clear:

I used to adore you The lies made sense somehow Gave myself away without a fight But betrayal claims its price

He used to be in love with her and he pretended her lies made sense because they made him feel as if everything was OK. He didn't "fight with" the fact that she was lying to him because her lies made him feel comfortable and happy - simply, he just knew she was lying, but he wanted to believe in those lies because they made him feel safe and happy. But then "betrayal claims its price" - it's impossible to go on lying about loving each other all the time and all the shit will come into the light sooner or later.

At first I was scared Not used to murders mind But there was something beautiful So powerful, different, so divine

He was scared of being left alone, he wasn't used to dealing with "the murders mind" (I guess "a murder" means here killing the relationship), he couldn't imagine himself without her at first, but then came "something beautiful, powerful, different, divine" - it turned out that it is possible to live without her lies and the state he's in now is better than staying in the relationship based on lying. After breaking up there always is a time of recovery, and after the recovery you tend to see things from a different angle, it turns out love wasn't that strong and it's much easier to live alone than you thought it would be.

Pushing the faith Build on our rage

We're "pushing the faith", which means we help ourselves to head towards the inevitable ending. The mentioned lies HAVE TO end sooner or later, so let's bring it down as soon as possible instead of staying in this shithole we call the relationship. Then I guess there should be "BUILD OUT OF RAGE" - which means our faith, the break-up, the end of our relationship is brought by the consuming rage, being furious about the life full of lies.

Falling ideals Broken seals March to the shore You are a killer!

"Falling ideals, broken seals" - broken promises, all the plans for the future being torn asunder. Marching towards the shore symbolises recovery from the shitty state, getting to the safe land instead of floating with no direction OR heading towards the end, when everything changes. She's a killer because she killed the relationship, the feelings, everything they had.

Is it something that's always been there? Was it destined to leave its cage? I'm glad we met though I love to release the rage

He askes himself if the "SOMETHING" (might be another man, lack of mutual understanding, burnt out feeling etc etc etc) has always been between them, from the very beginning or only from a certain point of the relationship, and was it really destined to leave the cage, to come into the light, to become clear and visible. He askes it though it no longer matters - he's glad they had what they had, because he finds it somehow pleasant and comforting to release the rage, to become furious on everything around... yeah, who doesn't ;]

But everything has its end I've done my deed The final bullet was always meant for me!

And this is summing up everything - whatever we had and however it looked like, this just had to end, like everything else. He feels he acted the way he should, by making his deed done, fullfilling his "part of the deal". And I admit I don't get the final verse, that the final bullet was always meant for him. It might mean that he was the final target and that it was inevitable to finish in this way. OR it might mean (here's a total privacy, forgive me for that) she was lying to him all the time and in the end she claimed that it's everything his fault anyways.

I know that this is pretty much one-sided interpretation. I just broke up after three years of a goddamn relationship and I found the lyrics of this song just fit my situation so accurately that I couldn't resist. It might have quite different meaning, but to me it's all about my situation and the similar ones. All in all, that's the reason of creating art, ain't it? To move people. And to make them find themselves in it.

And whenever I listened to the song I heard "broken shields", but dunno, it might be just me. Good work mate, and yes, it is the best song on the album.

I dont think u got it right, azraw. The "beauty" he found was the beauty of temptation, the lust to end one's life, after which we has confronted with dissapointment in himself ("Falling ideals"), and the desire to take his own life because he cant live with himself after what he did. "But everything has its end I've done my deed The final bullet was always meant for me!"

I could be wrong though, this is just my way of seeing it.

Well i don't know if this is the actual lyric, but it sounds like something Anders would say: "Oh, I'm glad we're metal I love to release the rage!" That's how I hear it anyway - great song

It's "Oh, I'm glad we met though, I'd love to release the rage" and im gonna have to agree with luciferuz, it seems like a good theory.

Mmh. That kinda sounds like 'Wasn't destined to leave its cage', which, also, would make sense in the context of the song, whereas the 'murderer's mind' was not supposed to 'leave the cage' to, well, accomplish murder. However, it did, and he was 'glad they met' so he could 'release the rage'. Otherwise, Luciferuz is most likely right- that, or the whole killer thing is a metaphor for something else further complex. But I'm not going into that right now... n_n

I think this goes further than his mere temptation to kill something or someone. The use of the word 'you' as the killer I think refers to his alter ego or split personality that is the killer. In Flames have used the idea of insanity in their songs before so that's just how it seems to me.
