It's about drug addiction. More specifically, it's about trying to drown out pain and guilt with drugs, only to have it haunt you ever after.
Most of the songs on The Divine Conspiracy deal with some form of human corruption. This is about self destruction.
I can't believe there are no comments on this song, it's one of the best epica's song.
But I think it's about losing someone and being lost, she doesn't seem to find herself but she knows the memories will stay, no matter what.

Actually, I have to disagree with the drug addiction theory. I read the lyrics and it sounds more like just letting go of the past to find redemption. The screaming is about destruction he's brought about, which later wracks him with guilt. But, there's somebody telling him to just let it go while he lays on his death bed.

It sounds to me like she's trying to ensure someone that her drug addiction won't affect anything in her mind badly.

Somehow, I think it's about the book Frankenstein, or some situation similar to it. If you've read the book, you'll agree that there are MANY similarities between the song and the book. I shall remember this song when I'm working on my Frankenstein project!
I also think its about drugs and the difficult process of rehab. The music is trying to catch these emotions and reflect them. I think this song is beautiful one of the best songs of Epica.
Chasing the dragon refers to opium (heroin)... It mean you want to reach the same "high" as the first time you use it but not being able to.

The drug addiction theme seems to make sense - the song title could be a reference to a method of smoking opium common in Hong Kong's drug dens in the days of the Walled City. Perhaps Epica have read the book by Jackie Pullinger - who knows...

The whole album is a concept. The character goes through all negative human emotions in the first part of the album:

Actually it is about a drug addiction. The other guy had it completely right, it's about opium (heroin). I didn't think so at first but after you do some research "chasing the dragon" is a term used in prison life, drug dealers were often referred to as dragons, thus if you are searching for a high then you are chasing the dragon. Also, the dragon is was referred as the trail of smoke that is created when you heat up things like opium.
