Beauty of Uncertainty Lyrics
I need a mirror
In the eyes of a man.
I need no protection
From my bullet-proof plan.
I've got a ticket
For all that I lack.
You might think that I'm always gone
But I know that I'm coming back.
Sit at my table
Sip from my bowl.
Feel like I know you now
And I will do until I get old.
You might not see me
But trust that I'll stay.
But there's no sense in traveling
If we've already been that way.
Night is a matter
Hidden in grass
Bite like a light
Depends on the ways
To see how long it lasts
But you know better
You stand your ground
Might just stain a little
But she knows you're sticking around
The beauty of uncertainty...
Ooh...
Ahh, ooh...
In the eyes of a man.
I need no protection
From my bullet-proof plan.
For all that I lack.
You might think that I'm always gone
But I know that I'm coming back.
Sip from my bowl.
Feel like I know you now
And I will do until I get old.
But trust that I'll stay.
But there's no sense in traveling
If we've already been that way.
Hidden in grass
Bite like a light
Depends on the ways
To see how long it lasts
You stand your ground
Might just stain a little
But she knows you're sticking around
Ahh, ooh...

i will be the first to say that this is the best song on the album. KT throws so much emotion into it...its hard not to feel what shes conveying... i love what this song means to me and ill selfishly keep that because its really hard to describe what it DOES mean to me. i will say that the most brilliant line in the song is this: you might think that im always gone, but i know that im coming back.
night is an adder hidden in grass she bites like her life depends on it and waits to see how long you last but you know better you stand your ground it might just sting a little but she knows youre sticking around

any description or explanation will take away from it.. it's the feeling it gives you, not something to understand.. it gave me the feeling and i still don't understand.. and maybe I'm wrong.
this is a fantastic song, very haunting live.
the meaning of the song has to fit into the meaning and them of the album as a whole, which a journey through peril and triumph, you get to where you want to be , but sometimes you have to make sacrifices and bad things happen along the road to being where you want to be.
this song for me is about basically about how sometimes it's better to be uncertain about something rather than know how its gonna turn out, like if its gonna turn out bad, you would rather not know in advance. it also could mean being somewhere, getting so far and then not knowing what to do to get past it. finally, i think its clever, because everyone is uncertain about the clear meaning of the song.
the best lyric in the song 'you might think that im gone for good, but i know that im coming back' amazing. so powerful, a sense of triumph the way she sings it
a phenomenal song.
i agree with toblerone00 it's INCREDIBLE live!! and how she includes the loop pedal in the part where she repeats "the beauty of uncertainty" when she performed it at the gig i was at she started the song alone on stage and while she was looping and layering her voice to build and build the band came on stage and the suspense was amazing and then BAM this huge explosion of a masterpiece of a song!!

I love the way this song sounds and I love so many of the lines following, especially the simile of life as a snake. But I have to be honest and say I hate the first line. "I need a mirror in the eyes of a man." That makes it appear as though she needs a man to recognize that within herself that is amazing and worthy. And I don't think she's the kind of musician who would advocate such thing. I think it's just a sad line. Oh well. I was just wondering if anyone else also felt so very ambivalent about that.
Either way, the rest of the song is beautiful and soul-stirring.
I felt the same way, until I realized that the last stanza actually says "night is an adder" (viper). I think in this song KT moves between being the voice of the evil adder and being an observer. So, I think when she says "I need a mirror in the eyes of a man" she means mankind. I think she is being the seductive voice of evil and saying that she needs man to carry out her plan because she can't do it alone. I agree, KT is way too strong to say she needs a man : )...

She said live that the lyric for the final verse "Night is an adder"
Not matter.
Thank you. You are right- and now the whole song makes sense to me!

I always felt the song was about a couple, the woman and her insecurity and the man who feels hurt but they're both uncertain about the relationship. Because of that notion they're both uncertain about everything and that's the beauty of it because they rather not know what comes
