Over the sea and far away
She's waiting like an iceberg
Waiting to change
But she's cold inside
She wants to be like the water

All the muscles tighten in her face
Buries her soul in one embrace
They're one and the same
Just like water

The fire fades away
Most of everyday
Is full of tired excuses
But it's to hard to say
I wish it were simple
But we give up easily
You're close enough to see that
You're the other side of the world to me

On comes the panic light
Holding on with fingers and feelings alike
But the time has come
To move along

The fire fades away

Can you help me?
Can you let me go?
And can you still love me
When you can't see me anymore?

The fire fades away

This could be about physical distance or simply emotional distance. I've had this happen to me in a relationship. You fall in love. There's lots of "fire" and then reality sets in. There are other factors that get in the way. I.E. the person isn't ready to commit or they really don't know what they want. You begin to see the person's "other side." Relationships take work and figuring out just like learning how to be healthy. Practice, awareness, and being nice to yourself when you make a mistake. It gets a bit more tricky when another person is involved, doesn't it? :-) Anywho, KT Tunstall is a marvelous singer songwriter and definitely underrated. I hope her career last for decades!

    My Interpretation
I think this song is about 2 people that grew apart emotionally, not physically. All the muscles tighten in her face, buries her soul in one embrace, I think this is proof that they're physically together (the embrace) but they're so disconnected that the other person might as well be on the other side of the world. They keep making tired excuses to remain together. It's too hard to say it's over and she wishes it was simple to just get it over with. Can you help me? Can you let me go? so she doesn't have to be the one to end it.

this song to me is about a long term relationship, she's blaming herself for being cold inside and shes wanting to change to save their relationship but they are gradually becoming further apart and they are both close enough to see it... they are giving up on their relationship too easily, she wants to be free again but still wants to be loved, maybe she doesnt know what she wants... but to her it feels like the person is on the other side of the world, as they dont connect anymore

The first verse uses the iceberg as a metephor for how she feels inside before meetign the guy or whoever she's singing to. Before she met him, she was as cold inside as an iceberg. The water aroudn her was free and generally (not being frozen and all) warmer. In the second verse, she's met him and she describes their relationship as two becoming one, flowing through each other "like water". (And hence warmer ... this is where "the fire fades away" is derived later on in the song) the rest of the song is about him going away and hence the warmth. "The fire fades away" means he fades away. There realtionship fades away. On a seperate note You're CLOSE ENOUGH to see that you'r on the OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLd to me, is some kind of oxymoron. Clever ;)

Firstly, this song's brilliant, i love the way her voice is in the line "you're the other side of the world to me" its simply beautiful...i think its quitw significant that shes using 3rd peron in the first verse "she" as opposed to "me" in the chorus. i htink its saying how she wants to be liek everyone else, free, everything simple, but she simply isn't...the chorus seems like a re;lationship...they're really close...but theyr just not...its like hard to epxlain...i was kinda with this guy, we're realyl alike, but we differ on one thing, that was the most important...its liek shes saying we're eally close, its all that ive longed for, but now we are this close, i can see its just not gunna work, however much i wish it would... *sigh*...stunning voice, great imagery

oo just to add to that....the fire fades away bit... when they first met, everything seemed great and simple, they seemd really alike, the fire of their chemistry kinda covered up the fact that they just couldnt happen...but then as it faded away, the passion going...she realised that they wree headoing in different directions...

This song is such a grower - I love the imagery in the first verse It's all self-explanetory - a long distance realtionship that's just not working out because of the distance. And they're both to blame. They both want to hang on, but it's too hard beacuse they can't see each other.

I don't think that this song is about a long distance relationship. i just think that "you are the other side of the world" doesn't mean that they are actually on the other side of the world, it just seems like they are. thats how far apart they are now as opposed to how they were in the beginning.
