Well take it down
And drop it off a notch
The bottom dropped
Out of your plans
And what are you going to do
When you find out
That everyone hates you

Well I don't know
How it is I feel
I'm having trouble
Even keeping it real
You're messing around
You're playing games
You're talking shit
You're dropping names
Well you do it awfully
Yeah you do it awfully
Just remember that

(Chorus)
This town
Is bringing me down
Yeah this town
I can't hang around in
Arizona

Well everyone
Loves a drink
Nobody loves a drunk
Your boat set sail
A day later it sunk
Hush
Keep it on the down low
Charming, a great disguise
For you to hide
For you to hide
Who it is you really are
I can run away
But I'll never get far from

(Chorus)

You don't want to talk about it
Which just confirms you're completely full of shit
I've had my fill now I'm through with it
Well everybody knows what you're all about
And we don't want to hear your lies anymore
No this town doesn't need you around anymore
Anymore

(Chorus)

I laid the blame but nothing changed
The scenery
Remains the same
And what are you going to do
When you find out
That everyone hates you
Home sweet home

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
