This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
I don't think this song is quite as literal to me as a lot of people are interpreting it on here. I think the song is about reflection on one's past, not at the end of life, but rather during a time period of great change in his life. "crippled and slow" I think refers to feelings of not being able to recognize changes in life. "Peer in" and "cup the window" signify that he has finally realized some things about his life, but is too late to really do anything about it. Maybe he's lost some one close to him. He's seeing this person moving on with his or her own life in a way that he just can't. "I'm not really like this"-- he's not really so introspective.
"End of a bloodline" Again, end of an era. The end of something that was good, and was all he ever really knew. And it was something that he took for granted would always be there. "The moon is a cold light". I think this refers to his late realization. Light has been shown on the problem, but it's the moon's light. The day is over.
This is such an incredibly bittersweet song. Makes me cry every time. And like everything else, I'm probably projecting my own circumstances on this song through my interpretation, but I think it can be agreed no matter how one interprets this song, its fucking beautiful.
