IT's funny but two lines in this song remind me of two other songs; one particularly affects the meaning for me, although i doubt it's an actual reference.
"I wanna ride 'cross West Virginia in the backseat of a Cadillac" makes me think of "Black Cadillacs" by Modest Mouse
"I wanna wrap the moon around us and lay beside you skin on skin" makes me think of "Bones" by The Killers

The reference to "Ride 'Cross West Virginia In the Backseat of a Cadillac.. You know some Cowboys like me go out like that" is a reference to Hank Williams. He and 17-year-old Charles Carr were driving to a show in Canton, Ohio. Carr had been driving all night and Hank had been drinking heavily and sleeping in the back when they pulled off the road at the Skyline Drive-In in Hilltop West Virginia. It was there that it was discovered Hank Williams had died during the journey.

He is talking about all of the things he wants to do and the results of what could happen if he continued doing those things.. the addictions, like booze and cigarettes and that it could end up being how he " goes out"...( that's the first part) so he needs her, kind of like to keep him on the right path. to save his soul He needs her like an addiction, to save him, to survive ( like the crops needing rain), show him the right way like a lighthouse leads a ship in. (2nd part) She loves him for him, she needs him, to be with him so close, skin on skin ..like he needs her:)
