In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
She's in the corner dealing the cards
She looks around and round
And slowly puts her poker face on
She's such a tease, a tease
It's just about the one thing she knows
The only way to get the certain thing she already owns
You know she always gets them somehow by the way that she moves
It's how she's reaching the goal
The goal is finally scored
But she is never alone
She looks again at her watch
Watch her as she will pretend
That she is harmless and nice
...
You're slow to learn
That you can't win with her
No, no
You're slow to learn
That you can't win with her
No, no
She's baffled but she swears she's secure
The insecurity has gone and gotten the best of her
The best has yet to come
We know just how the story will end
We know about the drinks, the smokes, and half an hour boyfriends
You think they really love you
Loving in this case is the cure
The cure is never really present when you're speaking with her
It's really getting to her ...
And are you missing the note?
The note is C flat, but G sharp
She's sharper but she don't blow
She's sinking to the bottom
You're slow to learn
That you can't win with her
No, no
You're slow to learn
That you can't win with her
No, no
Staring at a form that bleeds
This scene is dark and dreary
Tears are overflowing to me
Me of the ordinary girl
But she always knew that she was
She wasn't ordinary
Special was the meaning of course
How they would describe her
...
The end is coming closer
Looking, and she's ready to go
Let's go take lots of pictures
Maybe some would sell in the end
Turn into something that will end up being quite ...
My god, does no one love you?
You're slow to learn
That you can't win with her
You're slow to learn
That you can't win with her
Oh, oh
You're slow to learn
That you can't win with her
You're slow to learn
That you can't win with her
She looks around and round
And slowly puts her poker face on

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
I'VE GOT IT! after "That she is harmless and nice" it says "but really the incident"
yay :D
"Turn into something that will end up being quite ..."
... = permanent
that's what it sounds like and that's what makes the most sense!
sounds like he sings "half-an-hour boyfriends"
wtf this one is so good and only one comment?
this song is hard to make out...buut...i think it the first verse says "that she is harmless and nice but with malicious intent..." ??? i honestly dont know.
fave line is the way he says "my god does no one love you?" at their live show, my ex and i made eye contact from across the room just as andy sang this line...i guess we were both thinking that about each other.
she's baffled but she swears she's secure. i think.
so amazing..
here's what i've got: staring at a forearm that bleeds
maybe some would sell in the end the end is something that could end up being quite remanant (is remanent a word? haha.)
i have absolutely no clue about the last line in the first verse.
amongst all the 'indie' including the rest of manchester orchestra's collection, this song is by far the most catchy and most enjoyable to listen to. There has been a 4 day stretch where i literally cant get this song out of my head, that says something to me.
Thank you Alternative Press magazine for introducing me.
This song is about the kind of girl who will flirt with you and make you feel something special. Then you'll give her what she wants, even if it's just attention and validation, and then she'll move on. You're just another 'half an hour boyfriend'.
