Make you into dark
Straight into your heart
Sorry all you are
I don't really care
Well, I know you are...

Robots, robots
Brainwashed babies, blood from a leech
Spoken rabies
Spastic, plastic, battery acid
Yank on the leash
Draggin' you backwards
Oh, my closed eyes
Never see it comin'

There's nothing you can say
You can't wish me away
Every masochist gets a turn
The sadistic twist you'll never learn
Battery acid, battery acid

Battery acid in my veins
Unidentified remains
"Yes" button broke to automatic
Irrational dosage of furious static erasing what you are
You were

(Jealous)
To feel the way you do
(To mention)
A lie, then call it true
(Feel for)
Nothing except for yourself and nobody else
Hanging over the edge

There's nothing you can say
You can't wish me away
Every masochist gets a turn
The sadistic twist you'll never learn
In battery acid, battery acid, hey

    Vaseline has a good interpretation.

I like the 3rd verse: Battery Acid in my viens? Unidentified remains The YES button broke to automatic Irrational doseage of furious static erasing what You are We are

Taking this drug leaves you in a state where you don't know who you are anymore (unidentified remains).

You know longer choose to take the drug. Instead the drug takes you (The YES button broke to automatic).

Not surprisingly, another drug song. Yet this one seems almost like a anti-drug song.

Josh Homme is the spectator here; realising (probably out of experience) how the lives of drug-abusers look like; only looking forward to their next dose, not caring for the rest of the world and forgetting what it is to be really alive. They remain to be robots, brainwashed babies. It leaves them in a world of shit, and at the moment they realise were they are, it’s already to late. Homme doesn’t care, they didn’t want see it (closed eyes never see it coming) and he knows it’s to late to have pity for them. It’s the sadistic twist they never learn; everyone can get his high, you’re nothing special, you’re all robots waiting for the next dose. Running on this battery will only leave you with acid burns…

While I believe this is probably the worst song on Era Vulgaris (don't get me wrong, the CD's great!) it does get catchy and tolerable after a few listens. That's what I think is the hardest part about enjoying the music on the album. You have to get used to it. I don't think everyone truly understands that. Listen to it, full-length, two or three times and then see if you like it.

This song does my head in! I try so hard to follow the beat but when "Robots! Robots!" and "Battery acid in my veins" comes in I just get lost. Damn clever song to pull that off. Y'feel me?

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

When We Were Young
Blink-182
This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
