Rules and Regulations Lyrics
I will never be as cute as you.
According to the board of human relations.
I will never fly as high as you.
According to the board of public citations.
These are just the rules and regulations
Of the birds and the bees,
the earth and the trees.
Not to mention the Gods.
Not to mention the Gods.
All my life I've wanted to roam.
Even if it was just inside my own home.
Then one little day I chanced to look back.
Saw you sitting there, the innoccent culprit.
These are just the rules and regulations
Of the birds and the bees,
The earth and the trees.
Not to mention the Gods.
Not to mention the Gods.
These are just the rules and regulations.
Yeah these are just the rules and regulations.
And like everyone,
Yes I, like everyone,
Must follow them.
According to the board of human relations.
I will never fly as high as you.
According to the board of public citations.
Of the birds and the bees,
the earth and the trees.
Not to mention the Gods.
Not to mention the Gods.
Even if it was just inside my own home.
Then one little day I chanced to look back.
Saw you sitting there, the innoccent culprit.
Of the birds and the bees,
The earth and the trees.

Yeah these are just the rules and regulations.
And like everyone,
Yes I, like everyone,
Must follow them.

While the gay issue making it more difficult to break into the mainstream is a likely theme here... there may be an added more personal dimension to that. I've had a feeling that the "you" this song is sung to... "the innocent culprit" he looked back on.. could be his father. If you check out YouTube clips of Loudon Wainwright III from the 70's and 80's, he looks so much like Rufus, only cuter, with a more mainstream voice, and wrote songs with more widespread appeal. He even was on episodes of MASH as the folksinging soldier.
What does this song mean?Either way I LOVE the video! It's extremily entertaining and adorable!
Rufus is making fun of people who are saying that being gay is against god's will. socialized love, what's acceptable, what isn't. hiding in the closet (well, not Rufus. :-) ) "the rules and regulations of the birds & the bees. ... not to mention the gods... and I- like everyone- must follow them"
I love the piccolo in this song. :)
