Slideshow Lyrics

Do I love you because you treat me so indifferently?
Or is it the medication?
Or is it me?

Do I love you because you don't want me to rub your back?
Or is it the medication?
Or is it you?
Or is it true?

And I better be prominently featured in your next slideshow
Because I paid a lot of money to get you over here, you know?
And if I am not prominently featured in your next slideshow
I don't know what I'm gonna do

Do I love you, or is this feeling just a little pain?
A treasure chest is broken easily open
And usually I am such a happy prince
Behind the iron curtain, the city walls a solid prison

And I better be prominently featured in your next slideshow
'Cause I paid a lot of money to get you over here, you know?
And if I am not prominently featured in your next slideshow
I don't know what I'm gonna do!

Do I love you?
Do I love you?
Yes I do

Do I love you?
Yes I do

What an awesome song!!! It's really intimate, but it's got a lot of punch, too. RW's voice here is right on the money, as always. I feel like it's about someone who's being ignored by their love interest ("Do I love you because you treat me so indifferently?") and the fact that their love isn't being requited is driving them crazy ("Or is it the medication?" "And if I am not prominently featured in your next slideshow, I don't know what I'm gonna do") But even still, they're gonna keep on loving them, regardless of being ignored. (Do I love you? Yes I do.")

On the first 10 listens through the album, this is the best of the bunch. Don't know the history behind what a slideshow is, and would love some insights

The city walls / prison parallel and the happy prince reference combine to show how cold or unfeeling he usually is. But now he pays money for someone's time or attention, and masochistically revels in their indifferent behaviour - 'I don't know what I'm gonna do' doesn't make it seem like he's taking it so badly; maybe it's being ignored that he's actually paying for. He gets both love and the distance he's accustomed to.

This song fits my last relationship perfectly. But I don't particularly care if I'm her microsoft office presentation or not.

Back then Rufus was just in his relationship with Jorn Weisbrodt, so I think the song is about their then early relationship. But I've also heard stories about how his mom always used to make slidehows from all their familyvacations and that he paid her tickets to come visit him and Jorn in Germany and that this song was about that and him demanding to be in her next slideshows. But since Rufus never was one for serious relationships before he met Jorn, to me this song is about him dealing with a serious relationship!

My Opinion

"You treat me so indifferently" does not sound to me as if the song is addressed to Kate. Supposing the slideshow rumour is true, that may be where he got the slideshow idea and transferred it to another sort of relationship.
