The Man That Knew Too Much Lyrics

There was a man that knew too much
With a panic attic mind but a chance to numb
His golden touch to ignore the will of time
Had me struck down open to the fact
I was standing in a line with a broken occupation on my back

Time is not a moment we’re letting slip away
There’s nothing left to say it’s changing every day
The way I’m thinking in different shades of grey
It’s not enough to say that this is my love

He had the anti midas touch
Temporary state of mind
But a chance to die enhances growth
Now I’m trembling all the time
Stumble round making faces on the scene
Scene what what
Stumble round make your faces on your own

Time is not a moment we’re letting slip away
There’s nothing left to say it’s changing every day
The way I’m thinking in different shades of grey
It’s not enough to say that this is my love

I’m not your mocking bird
That sings your cellar song
She got a paper run
You’re compensated

Can we all gather round on the scene
Can we all move around on our own
Are ya a mover shaker all alone

Time is not a moment we’re letting slip away
There’s nothing left to say it’s changing every day
The way I’m thinking in different shades of grey
It’s not enough to say
Time is not a moment we’re letting slip away
There’s nothing left to say but this is my love

I’m not your mocking bird
That sings your cellar song
She got a paper run to write your letters wrong

i think this could partly be about his new state of mind, which is more relaxed and happy? that's the impression i got from "time is not a moment we're letting slip away..." it's like he can let go of thoughts, and not have this need dwell on negative ones or even the fear of not being happy again and trying to preserve moments. because he has accepted that life is transitory and can even celebrate that..."a chance to die enhances growth." i also think it could be about how people want him to still be this depressed moody rocker even though that's not who who he is anymore, especially when he says "i'm not your mocking bird, that sings your cellar song.' And he could be talking about his music when he says "it's not enough to say that this is my love", like people wanting more or other things from it. Also, the media misrepresenting him, "she got a paper run, to write your letters wrong"

Wow... That cleared a lot up. Good interpretation. The only thing I would add or think about from my point of view is that like "a chance to die enhances growth". To me I feel like that means the more obstacles you overcome the stronger you turn out. Stare death in the face & its not that scary anymore.

Good song. Silverchair seriously evolved.

Totally agree with everything clone22221111333 said, above. You totally hit the nail on the head regarding what I think Dan was trying to impart with this song.

IMO it IS about the band's evolution; his relationship with music; and the attitude of the press and fans.

The lyrics seems to be saying: "This is the direction the band is heading in NOW. If you don't like it, that's too bad." Dan is saying he has no intention of sitting still and resting on his (grungy old) laurels for the rest of his life.

In addition, the part that goes "a chance to die enhances growth" might mean that when he was really sick with anorexia and depression, he had a chance to die/kill himself (a-la Kurt Cobain) thereby cementing his legacy by dying young - but instead, he chose to live, grow up, move on...

no comment yet!! I like. Its more rock than some of the others. I like the 'anti-midas touch."
