Naked Lunch Lyrics

I want to throw up, but for now I hold back
I can’t express just how I’m feeling, its true
You want to grow up, but there’s a problem with that
There’s no where to go for someone who’s as stunted as you
Its true that I’m disgusted with myself as well
My tongue can not be tamed
It’s on a fire straight from hell
I eat the dirt you kick up, and flaw the chord that resonates
A gentle word I can not find a way to enunciate

You make me, you make me oh so sick
Oh so sick
You make me, yeah you know you make me
Sick, sick, sick I get sicker every day

Still your voice, pump your stomach
Set the garbage free
Oh I know you don’t get drunk
You just drink socially
Your reasons are all invalids, they can’t stand up
And when you talk I hear the brain cells die
So keep your mouth shut
I didn’t wake up to find myself as a bug
I’ve been one for much longer than I care to recall
I’m not a junkie lost in interzone or under the rug
I just eat the bug powder then I climb up the wall

Naked lunch: naked lunch is a novel that William S. Burroughs wrote in the 50’s under the influence of some heavy duty drugs. In 1991, director David Cronenberg adapted the novel into a bizarre film in which an exterminator addicted to his own pesticides becomes involved in a secret government plot being orchestrated by giant bugs in an Islamic port town in Tangier. The song however has less to do with the novel and film than it does with the idea of judgment and hypocrisy. The character in the song openly voices his disgust with the idea of alcohol and psychoactive drugs, yet at the close of the second verse he concludes by ingesting bug powder to free himself from his outrage.

“Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.” –James 3:10

William S. Burroughs garnered the title "Naked Lunch" from Jack Kerouac (I understand that it's spelled wrong, but no one is allowed to chastize me lest they have read three pieces of his work) who said it referred to that moment when the piece of food was on your fork, right about to enter your mouth, and you fully comprehend and truly SEE what you're about to ingest, it's a moment of realization and truth.

In this the nakes lunch is a realization of being a hypocrite, but at the same time willingly ingesting this bit of news and simply ignoring it with the use of "bug powder" (a reference the the Cronenberg movie of the same name).

Amidst all these good explanations, it's being a little over analyzed.

In plain" black-n-white", it's talking about how none of us really have a right to judge anyone.

It starts out pretty much saying "I can't express in how many ways I don't like you. You want to do all this stuff, but you can't because my opinion of you says so..."

It then goes on to say, You know I'm not perfect either, but you're WAY worse than me.You make me sick..." THEN [which like in the book] starts talking about ways to get your mind off yourself by using substances...

I also think Josh is giving a clear reference again to Kafka's Gregor Samsa with the "I didn't wake up to find myself as a bug"
