From the Beginning Lyrics
There might have been things I missed
But don't be unkind
It don't mean I'm blind
Perhaps there's a thing or two
I think of lying in bed
I shouldn't have said
But there it is
You see it's all clear
You were meant to be here
From the beginning
Maybe I might have changed
And not been so cruel
Not been such a fool
Whatever was done is done
I just can't recall
It doesn't matter at all
You see it's all clear
You were meant to be here
From the beginning
But don't be unkind
It don't mean I'm blind
Perhaps there's a thing or two
I shouldn't have said
But there it is
You were meant to be here
From the beginning
And not been so cruel
Not been such a fool
Whatever was done is done
I just can't recall
It doesn't matter at all
You were meant to be here
From the beginning

he's talking about a relationship romantic or not, possibly just directed to someone important in his life. we make mistakes, but they can be forgiven and forgotten. he realizes that there is something that he wanted and let it go but he was wrong, now he wants it back. i think the song is a kind of apology. he had some transient doubts but now sees what is good. awesome tune.
@nathan_yamaha - IMHO the song meaning is much more stark. This is saying that in his relationship with the other person, he has been habitually foolish and cruel. For some unspoken reason he can't even remember his evil deeds (possibly because he was drunk or drugged and not abel to remember), Philosophically, he is nihilistic and says it doesn't matter at all, because love and life themselves don't matter. But worst of all, from the beginnig of time or perhaps creation, their tragic relationship was meant to be.

@nathan_yamaha Indeed Nathan...great input to what you wrote...I live and feel the Laurels of this part of the son "YOU WERE MEANT TO BE HERE" of this Beautiful Great Baddass song and even more so on my recent passed on sweet, tender, pretty Wife/Gf whom unexpectedly passed (3/11/20)????.

@nathan_yamaha - Nathan, 'Beautiful and Thank You❤????. Ive always Love this song before my tragedy and just 3yrs ago, my Sweet, Pretty, Tender Love of My LIfe passed away unexpectedly, due to a medical we did not grab hold of. It was always a LOVE song to me, did not know of the meaning till now, due to what happened to me 3yrs ago. Thanks for taking the time on your input of this Beautiful song.

How about considering a deeper meaning? What if it the song causes us to pause and reflect on the events in our life and how they brought us to where we are? Might we perhaps consider the Creator who says He "inhabits eternity" and "knows the end from the beginning"? Rock stars aren't theologians, but the Spirit which hovered over the earth at it's creation still works in the minds of men and inspires things they themselves are unaware of. Just my 2¢.
@ChetMorton could very well be, although personally I take it more from a personal level, that is we are each here for a purpose / reason. It may not be clear to us, and perhaps it takes someone's perspective to realise it.

This song is great, I'm surprised there are so few comments. And the meaning is pretty clear. :]
im surprised about how few comments too. i know lucky man is a good song, but i figured this one had to be their second most popular song.

@swiminred obviously not given the differences in opinions / interpretations present. I personally think the lyrics are quite vague / ambiguous (intentionally), and this allows each to interpret as they see fit (depending on life experiences, beliefs etc. etc.)

@swiminred Yep. I lived on the laurels of this part of this baddass song "YOU WERE MEANT TO BE HERE" forever in my late teens ...and very sadly my sweet, tender, pretty Gf/Wife passed-on unexpectedly (3/11/21), we only together for only over 6yrs. I cry and hurt for Her so badly????...just knowing this Beautiful song.

Yes, this song is about mistakes and forgiveness. But it is mostly about great guitar and synthesizer.
@norder You sure got that right...I'd kill to be able to play just the intro!

Until recently I thought this song had a deep philosophical meaning about destiny and the human condition. It occurs to me that it was more likely he was just a rock star, and wrote a song after cheating on a lover in order to woo her back, filling it with deep lyrics to be convincing in that artistic way that they fall for every time. Oh hey, that is the human condition and destiny.
The meaning for me ... a song I wish I had written or been able to articulate, the morning after a night with Lorraine, and in the morning I called her Margaret. Really loved Lorraine, but it was over

I think it sounds like he was a bit of a dick and insensitive to his partner, maybe taking them for granted....Then later realises how important they are, or were to them....
Yes, very few comments compared to the beuty of (especially) the music. More generally speaking, I feel it also says something like"don't judge people or their behaviour if you don't know what happend from the very beginning", if you don't know the whole story from its start. He's ot kind of complaining, just a little regretting the other person he's now talking to hadn't been with him from the beginning. Also an apology, but now it all seems pretty clear, pity for the absence at the beginning.

I Grew up to this song and rumor was it was about an abortion. If so it was always a sad song to me.
@Gramma I can sort of see where you could get that from, but not sure I agree personally.
