There might have been things I missed
But don't be unkind
It don't mean I'm blind
Perhaps there's a thing or two

I think of lying in bed
I shouldn't have said
But there it is

You see it's all clear
You were meant to be here
From the beginning

Maybe I might have changed
And not been so cruel
Not been such a fool
Whatever was done is done
I just can't recall
It doesn't matter at all

You see it's all clear
You were meant to be here
From the beginning

he's talking about a relationship romantic or not, possibly just directed to someone important in his life. we make mistakes, but they can be forgiven and forgotten. he realizes that there is something that he wanted and let it go but he was wrong, now he wants it back. i think the song is a kind of apology. he had some transient doubts but now sees what is good. awesome tune.

How about considering a deeper meaning? What if it the song causes us to pause and reflect on the events in our life and how they brought us to where we are? Might we perhaps consider the Creator who says He "inhabits eternity" and "knows the end from the beginning"? Rock stars aren't theologians, but the Spirit which hovered over the earth at it's creation still works in the minds of men and inspires things they themselves are unaware of. Just my 2¢.

This song is great, I'm surprised there are so few comments. And the meaning is pretty clear. :]

Yes, this song is about mistakes and forgiveness. But it is mostly about great guitar and synthesizer.

Yes, very few comments compared to the beuty of (especially) the music. More generally speaking, I feel it also says something like"don't judge people or their behaviour if you don't know what happend from the very beginning", if you don't know the whole story from its start. He's ot kind of complaining, just a little regretting the other person he's now talking to hadn't been with him from the beginning. Also an apology, but now it all seems pretty clear, pity for the absence at the beginning.

IMHO the song meaning is much more stark supported by the music itself. This is saying that in his relationship with the other person, he has been habitually foolish and cruel. For some unspoken reason he can't even remember his evil deeds (possibly because he was drunk or drugged and not able to remember), Philosophically, he is nihilistic and says it doesn't matter at all, because love and life themselves don't matter. But worst of all, from the beginnig of time or perhaps creation, their tragic relationship was meant to be.

Greg Lake dialogs with his Muse. Not the "romantic" one, the artistical one. The one who illuminates the real creators like him. He kind of acknoleges he should have listened more to inspiritings, from the beggining.

I think Greg Lake was somewhat of an enigmatic lyricist. He quite often wove disparate and sometimes abstract imagery into a song to create or augment a feeling. I remember when he was asked about 'Closer to Believing' in an interview and the answer he gave was that some songs take so long to write the actual meaning changes over the course of its writing. Greg quite often wrote lyrics with an uncredited co-author (his most regular being Peter Sinfield - both credited and uncredited) or would slightly re-write a collaborator's lyrics in order to get a co-author credit. I'm not disparaging Greg through these comments - plenty of songwriters do it (Paul Simon for one) - but I'm trying to illustrate that it may not have been as simple as what inspired Greg to write this song, but there may have been a few influences.

A weak confession of adultery due to the arrogance of man and his vulnerability to sin. It's just another tale of Jezebel and her victims. One of my favorite songs of all time. I say, don't be such a sour pussy, Be humble and Repent! God is kind enough to forgive and to grant your sorry ass another chance of eternal life. youtube.com/…

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
Per the FAQ on Keane's website, Keane's drummer Richard Hughes, stated the following: "We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..." With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."
