Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. i love this song, and the album is great. i think my favorite cd is the mother cd, but i havent been able to listen to the whole thing much since i only got it today! the mechanic sounds pretty different from their previous albums, and i really like the path cd, but its awfully emo...
im surprised more people havent commented on this song. i love how the guitar,piano and guitar all chime in at their seperate times. It sounds so elegant.

In fact, he was fed up with the music business and considered dropping out altogether. "I was driving home one night and I was feeling like I just had enough," he explains. "I figured I'd work construction or retail or whatever. I hated the business part of it and I was thinking that I wanted to do something that wasn't about advancing my career. I took that from The Early November's myspace page, and I think it's pretty self-explanitory. The Early November came very close to breaking up during the making of this record. This song (my favorite on the new CD) is about how Ace came so close to giving up until he realized just how much everyone means to him. In this song, he expresses how The Early November is his life. He needs to hear some 'deep end,' (Sergio, bass player) and some slide guitar (Bill or Joe, guitarists) and some drums crackin' (Jeff, drummer), and he'll feel alright. There are other references in the song (People he works for, his love and new wife, Jennifer Enders, etc.).
In all, this song is about how Ace came to realize how, in the midst of overpowering and overwhelming stress, he just needs these people. He plainly states this in the last line of the song.

i love how it comes in on the last verse its just really well suited
i love how the other instruments come in as he cues them in the lyrics. and this is just such a great song; he just needs the music, he needs his band mates, his friends, his wife, and he'll be alright.

TEN finished their finale show in Philadelphia last year with this song. The lights started out low. Everyone was on stage by the end. They gave an adorable grand bow all together at the end. It was incredible. Epic. Gorgeous.
I will miss this band. And the feeling this song gave me knowing he was so happy with the band at one point, yet it all just fell apart in the end.
Aw man, I would have been in buckets of tears if I was at that show. That's something that would probably stay with you for a long time.
