i love this song ... so far my fave on imago album its probably one of the heaviest song on album but lyrics sound like it could be a ballad.

This one of my all time favourite "TBE" songs. Last night I dreamt I held you with me Close enough to feel you breathe" I have a feeling inside me that this song is about falling in love && then trying to reach out for the person && never letting go. "Just keep holding my hand because I'm trying to reach you" && also talking about how the one you love might not understand that your always going to be there for them.

I'm not sure its about falling in love cause "We've trying to reach you" unless its not an monogamous one.

I think it has to do with grief and how his girlfriend/partner is dealing with it. It may be a death that is particularly close to the girlfriend and has put her in a depressive spiral. Shutting herself off from everyone else and her partner and family. hence the "Last night I dreamt I held you with me Close enough to feel you breathe" and "Last night I dreamt I held you with me Closer still to see you leave" line for me have the feeling that his girlfriend isn't sleeping well hasn't been herself since the death and he's hoping the she comes back. hence the dreaming that she is close to him again.

Her family and b/f are trying to reach her, get through to her and help her. telling her that they are always there. "Just keep holding my hand" you know its ok "We all fall down like this sometimes"

and the last verse about walking in field gives me the imagery of funeral all the broken flowers and tears. its like she is dwelling stuck in an infinite loop and can't get past the grief.

This song is no.1 played on my ipod. 98 times!! Should be reaching the century very soon. This Year and Before They Knew are both in the 80's.

this song,like the band,is forever intertwined with my partner. When we were apart, the words of this song were what i wanted to say to him. i was forever reaching out but always came so close and yet i was still so far away. It speaks of longing, and hope, because we are all reaching out for something. It's painful to think we can want for something or someone so much.

• Pretty much just what it says. He's dreaming she's there with him, but he wakes and she isn't. He describes how all he's ever wanted was for her to be there with him. Close enough to feeling someone breathe is a very intimate thing, he wants her to be close to him in the emotional sense as well as the physical, (i am assuming).

-Saying that other people as well as him have been trying to connect back with the girl, and that a lot of people have times where they aren't ok. He's trying to reach her to help.

• He's dreaming that he's losing her (subconscious saying its a fear of his) -its kind of like he knows no matter how close he holds her, she's going to leave. It's like he can't keep her there with him no matter what he does- and that he hopes she'll come back to him of her own accord.

• I see the fields as her life and how its been destroyed/how she views it. The dreams are the things she wants, and he doesn't want her to stop wanting him.

• He's basically saying, just don't let go, he's trying so hard, he refuses to let go, to give up and let her leave.

• He's looking at her life through her eyes, imagining what it's like. OR: he's experiencing pain and describing it similar to how he describes her own pain.
• The second last line, to me, is him admitting to his vulnerability, because 'in the tiny hours' is like, the time when you're most desperately honest and vulnerable.... I can't explain it properly.... it's when you feel most alone.. and you admit to yourself what it is you want/need the most.
• The last line reinforces that fact that everyone has a time/s where they lose all hope and suffer some sort of loss/pain.

The general meaning that comes to my mind when I try to picture this song is that a girl has depression/suffers a great loss and can't deal with it, retreating into herself, and he's trying to keep her with him, trying not to let her slip away any more than she's already done. He's trying to help her come back to who she was, saying that alot of other people fall down too... He doesn't want her to leave him/fall out of love with him. There's the underlying point that he can't live without her/her loving him.
