I get the impression of someone who's just been dumped, and yet their ex is still trying to be nice to them.

The person's proud, they don't want help, nor do they feel that they need it. They want to make it on their own.

When I listen to this song, I get the impression that they're talking about that overall, fake sympathy we all get when we're down.

It talks about how people will only help you out because it makes Them feel good about Themselves, which doesn't make you feel better. It makes you feel worse, it "breaks you down". They don't sincerely want to help or to make you feel better. It makes them feel like a good person to sympathize.

I believe this song is about a guy who possibly went through a break up and doesnt want anyones "Sympathy" he just wants to get through it by himself.

i think this is about a break up too. greener150 is pretty much correct. but there are also different situations that could go for this song. anytime when someone is receiving unwanted sympathy. let's say ure dad or something got sick. u dont want ppl to feel srry for u. and i love bt... but do these lyrics seem close to some of their other songs? a slap in the face... just cant erase... i swear they say that in another song off the first album too. and offa "Lies" the lyrics are close to sympathy's "my self righteous rfeind i just cant pretend." wtv. luv it!

this, lyrically speaking, isn't exactly Billy Talent's strongest, but it's still awesome. It could be about the sympathy in a ruined relationship, but another idea hit me.

Most of us fans know that the drummer of the band, Aaron Solowuniuk, (however you spell his last name) has MS, or multiple schlerosis. "This is how it goes" off of their debut album is about his MS. So, I think this song is about it. Aaron doesn't want special treatment because he has MS. "Oh, give him a break, he has MS." No, nobody should want that.

Yeah, some people give sympathy to make themselves feel/look good. I think that is why the guy in the CD booklet has a halo ontop, because it appears he/she appears to be a great person because of the sympathy they gave.

this is a really good song not one of my favorite but basically i love all billy talent songs. haha

I agree with Fallen Leaves on this one. When i first heard the song, my first thoughts were about Aaron and his MS. "I dont need sympathy, if you feel sorry for me then it makes me feel bad. I just want to get on with life and not have people feeling sorry for me because of this" Thats one way i see it.

I think Bt wrote it about sympathy in general. not any one reason for sympathy like break ups. Just generally how you feel about sympathy when people give it to you, fake or not.

I was thinking about this, and you know how they wrote 'this is how it goes' about aaron's MS, maybe this could do alot with that, too. I mean, it took aaron a long time to addmit it because he didn't want sympathy so thats what I think it's about. But its pretty much about sympathy and how much they hate it.
