Can't Be Really Gone Lyrics
Her hat is hanging by the door
The one she bought in Mexico
It blocked the wind
It stopped the rain
She'd never leave that one
So, she can't be really gone
The shoes she bought on Christmas Eve
She laughed and said they called her name
It's like they're waiting in the hall
For her to slip them on
So, she can't be really gone
I don't know when she'll come back
She must intend to come back
I've seen the error of my ways
Don't waste the tears on me
What more proof do you need
Just look around the room
So much of her remains
Her book is lying on the bed
The two of hearts to mark her page
Now who could ever walk away at chapter 21
So, she can't be really gone
Just look around this room
So much of her remains
Her book is lying on the bed
The two of hearts to mark her page
Now who could ever walk away
With so much left undone
So, she can't be really gone
No, she can't be really gone
The one she bought in Mexico
It blocked the wind
It stopped the rain
She'd never leave that one
So, she can't be really gone
She laughed and said they called her name
It's like they're waiting in the hall
For her to slip them on
So, she can't be really gone
I don't know when she'll come back

No, she can't be really gone

It's about a man who is grieving his wife's death. She was taken away from him, and he's in denial that she's truly gone for good.
It can also be relating to a divorce, I suppose.
I agree, I don't know what's happened to her, perhaps she died suddenly, perhaps she's left him? But he's saying "look, all her stuff is there, she can't be gone, she must be coming back" and he's also saying "don't cry for me", which suggests death.
The woman indeed died... The error of his ways only implies he blames himself...perhaps there was an accident in which she died. True tho, the ways of the world, and people's dirty minds support otherwise. However, when someone leaves, they take their hobbies their activities bowling balls, guns, clothing, books, darts, and laptop. In this case hat, book, and shoes. No one knows the day or the hour she'll come back. (In the resurrection)
The "Yeah, ooh" at the end indicates that she has, in fact, left him and has not simply died.
the man in the song is in denial about his wife leaving him... he is using the presence of her items around the house to console himself.
i dont think she died because of these lines:
I don't know when she'll come back She must intend to come back I've seen the error of my ways
this song is very sad... but i have always loved it

My interpretation has always been that the woman dumped him because of something that he did. The key line that convinces me of this is "I've seen the error of my ways". Of course he sees this too late. Sure, all those things are there, but the odds of her coming back sound pretty slim to me.
The problem, in my opinion, is the video for this song, which treats the lyrics as if she died. I suspect that is why so many people think the died instead of left.
