And if I weren't leavin',
Would I catch you dreamin'
And if I weren't gonna be gone now,
Could I take you home

And if I told you I love you,
Would it change what you see
And if I was staying,
Would you stay with me

And if I had money,
Would it all look good
And if I had a job now,
Like a good man should

And if I came to you tomorrow,
And said "let's run away"
Would you roll like the wind does,
Baby would you stay

My heart is dancin',
To a November tune
And I hope that you hear it,
Singing songs about you

And I sing songs of sorrow,
Because you're not around
See, babe I'm gone tomorrow,
Baby follow me down

And I don't know why I have to,
But this man must move on
I love my time here,
Didn't know 'til I was gone

November shadows, shade November change
November spells sweet memory, the season blue remains
November spells sweet memory, the season blue remains

Your yellow hair is like the sunlight,
However sweet it shines
Bit by the cold of December,
I'm warm beside your smile

Oh lady tell me I'm not leaving,
You're everything I dream
I'm killing myself thinking,
I've fallen like the leaves
I'm killing myself thinking,
I've fallen like the leaves

I left my home under a somewhat similar mind set. One of my fondest memories of Maryland was showing this song to my Father, and us sitting in front of the fire place with the guitars in hand, figuring out Scott's chords and singing/playing along, before I left. Bittersweet. I always hoped to see The Avett Brothers live and experience their acclaimed energy! But I'm in Hawaii now, I doubt I will get to see them all the way out here. So, I'll cling to my bittersweet memory. Thank you, avett brothers. Beautiful song, certainly one of my favorites.

I think this song is about a man that is in love with a woman, but for whatever reason (timing, circumstances, etc) has to go. I'm not sure if it necesszarily has to do with the woman not putting as much effort into the relationship, but how maybe factors like distance, or lifestyle may be the reason they are putting an end, or pause, into their current relationship. It's not because he loves her less, he's just not able to love her more.

This song is absolutely amazing for: the lyrical content/meaning, their beautiful harmonizing voices, the melancholy yet soothing music. I can't get over how much this song is relating to my life right now. I agree with Arnar's meaning. He's trying to keep the relationship going (or rather was trying) and has finally given up because she just won't put anymore effort into it. The worst part about all of this is the reason I'm able to relate. 1] It's November... 2] I feel like I'm going through that part of my relationship right now.

Honestly, it makes me tear up to listen to it but at the same time I can't help but to smile. For a song to have that both effects at the same time is awesome! And it doesn't hurt that it's one I can listen to over and over again.

    :)

god how can no one of commented on this already?! its a great amazingly amazing song. its almost like he's in a relationship and wants to leave it because shes not really showing much of an interest in him anymore, and he's depressed that about..... if nothing else, that what it means to me, and the way that i personally relate to it

This is my favorite song. The acoustic version by Scott Avett, which is on youtube, is constantly on repeat for me. Thank you Avett's for putting out such beautiful melodies.

    My Interpretation

I think the relationship ending based upon the unwillingness of the girl (or other party if you want to take the gender out of the artist) is obvious, but the use of November is the key to this track's brilliance. If anyone knows Frank Sinatra, he did a song called "A Very Good Year", that represented a person's life. Spring was the beginning, when everything in life was fresh and new and exciting, Summer was the prime of life, Autumn was the portion of life of reflecting fondly and still living, and Winter was the end. I think of November Blue as representative of a relationship in this same way. November is the next to last month of the year and is typically bitterly cold and the epitomy of a "glance at a harsh winter to come." November Blue is a sad song that encompasses the true beginning of the end. The"what ifs" are pouring in, the "coulda, woulda, shoulda's are all you can think about, and while you dream about that alternate reality, you know that a cold long winter is waiting. The end is upon you, and all you can do is contemplate why it is ending and what you might have done differently. The genius of it all, and also the saddest part, is the realization of the answer coming at too late of an hour to fix the problem. November Blue is a modern day Greek tragedy.

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
