its kind of obvious what its about: a woman has fallen out of love with her boyfriend, and she leaves him while he's sleeping.

He is sleeping and while he is he knows a girl is out there leaving him or cheating on him.

i completely disagree. if she had fallen out of love with him and left him while he was sleeping why would he not dare to try and wake her from a dream where they are in love? i dont think its that simple. City Sleeps lyrics are deep. I dont reckon he's sleeping at all. I think she is dying or something, twilight finds you in my arms the morning finds you gone, shes dead or whatever, and its like denial, they have to pretend they're still in love. and the next morning cold virgin air is all that remains, in the cold let darkness fall. yes, so thats my opinion.

i agree with joybelle if you think about it in a really deep way you can easily take it as dealing with death. the first two lines would show how she is getting weak because of whatever is killing her, then the night is litterally stealing her life, figurativly stealing his. she's in the arms of eternity when she actually dies, at twilight she is dying in his arms and by morning she's gone. he's left only with dreams of her, and he doesn't dare wake her, or try to save her from the inevitable. letting darkness fall is referring to letting death come, and the lines leading to that relate to the day fallowing her death, in which life outside goes on, but something is different without her there, especially for him.
this song is amazingly beautiful, I love it.

This is a truly beautiful song, I've listend to it a thousand times and I've never once got sick of it.

Yeah, I assumed that this song is about death as well.

"Your heart is tired of feeling Your hand is letting go of mine The night has fallen and it's stealing The last of our little life this time" It's not like her heart is getting tired of feeling, but it's like her heart it slowly deteriorating because the cancer/illness/disese is making her weak. The part where is says 'the night has fallen and it's stealing the last of our little life this time' it's like... because it's night time, she'll be asleep and he wants her to be awake, because they don't have much time left to spend together.

"In the arms of eternity Twilight finds you in my arms The morning finds you gone" It's like, she was sleeping in his arms at night time, then by the time the sun has risen, she has passed away whilst she was asleep.

"We gotta dream forever We have to pretend we're still in love And I wouldn't dare try to wake you Sleep with me a dream in love" It's like, she'll be with him in his dreams and he doesn't want to wake up because if he does he won;t get to be with her. 'I wouldn't dare try to wake you, sleep with me a dream in love' he doesn't want to wake her because she's peaceful, and because in their dreams they are together and happy and that's all he wants for them.

I love this song, it's incredibly beautiful.

hm...somhow to me few things don´t match, yet.

The lines: "We gotta dream forever We have to pretend we're still in love And I wouldn't dare try to wake you Sleep with me a dream in love"

This might also be understood as if he is being concious that "her heart is tired of feeling" and that their love is getting weaker but he doesn´t tell her

-> "I wouldn´t dare to wake you" (means that he lets her dream of still having a strong relationship until she will realise that she can´t fight anymore-a bit egoistic of him, maybe-) "We gotta dream forever..." he doesn´t want to lose her though he reads the signs that they won´t be together forever (your hand is letting go of mine).

So maybe they don´t get along anymore with their relationship and the troules are growing too much- he wants her to stay but realises how she´s getting weaker and knows that soon she will leave him. But allthough she will go:

"In the arms of eternity Twilight finds you in my arms The morning finds you gone" =He will always be with her together at night in his dreams. (pretty sure about this part)

Btw. I can´t find anything which hints of her dying-otherwise he wouldn´t tell her "we gotta.."would he?

This and "Be a Man" are the only two really good songs on this blasted album. A shame, b/c I know they have potential as those two songs show that. Oh well...maybe the next album?

The love in their relationship has faded, but they still fuck, pretending the love is still there.
