i agree with joybelle if you think about it in a really deep way you can easily take it as dealing with death. the first two lines would show how she is getting weak because of whatever is killing her, then the night is litterally stealing her life, figurativly stealing his. she's in the arms of eternity when she actually dies, at twilight she is dying in his arms and by morning she's gone. he's left only with dreams of her, and he doesn't dare wake her, or try to save her from the inevitable. letting darkness fall is referring to letting death come, and the lines leading to that relate to the day fallowing her death, in which life outside goes on, but something is different without her there, especially for him.
this song is amazingly beautiful, I love it.
