The Bruised Reed Lyrics

Are you a bruised reed?
A smoldering flax?
Are you a broken branch?

Oh, and do you love it?
Do you love to forget like I do?

One will sift as wheat,
But one has come with robes.
One will slice your ankle.
Love, love, love.

There are these sharp gold knives
In this space meant for affections,
Where the pink skin baby once belonged.

When I speak, "I cough them out,
Gather them up in my arms,
And swallow them back down.

Cover art for The Bruised Reed lyrics by Anathallo

This song is based on a verse in Isaiah, "A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth." Isaiah 42:3[KJV]

And knowing matt he also probaly took some of it from the puritan writer Richard Sibbes with his book The Bruised Reed... which I believe talks about the the suffering of a christian using the metaphor of the Bruised Reed and the Smoking Flax.
