I've always thought this song was about a relationship with a sex addict who wants an open relationship.

• They do it all the time (regardless the season, she's sweating; lots of effort put into the sex), but satisfaction is impossible to reach

"You can't even cope with it Then it passed me by"

• The partner wants to sleep with other people.

"Fast slow living is holding me back Wishing that my baby never told me that Can't even cope to make it last Then it passed me by We'll take it over And make it mine"

• Here's where he asks for an open relationship. Fast-slow living is where they're at; she's not sure if she's being "old-fashioned" by rejecting the idea or not ("slow" living), and she can't deal with it, so having an open relationship "passes her by", and the partner agrees to stay in a closed relationship.

"And you wanted it, wanted it, wanted it again"

• But that's not enough for the partner.

"My dear you've been used I'm breaking in the news"

• He cheats, and she forgives him and agrees to be in an open relationship.

"Well, love nearly beat us I'm thinking like you, I'm thinking of you"

• If they both loved each other in the same way, it would have torn him apart and caused her to ultimately lose him much farther down the road, so instead, she's sleeping around for his sake (thinking like you), but does it so he doesn't feel guilty/while imagining it's him (thinking of you).

"Well, love follows near us Can love really steer us? Oh, can't it be true? Oh, can't it be true?"

• She's hoping that he'll want to stay devout to her eventually.

"Lost all reason for playing your games Better quit staring 'cause you're looking the same"

• She grows tired of it being an open relationship.

"Can't even cope to make a change Then it passed me by And we'll take it over And make it mine"

• They go back into a closed relationship, making it "hers", but as he can't really do it (cope to make a change), she knows he'll end up cheating.

"Use me up, use me up Taper off and I'm had"

• She'll stay with him, knowing he's cheating, all for the sake of love, until she either can't stand it anymore or doesn't care.

is it just me or this song reminds me of a lullaby?

the first verse is almost identical as the hush little baby lullaby and that bugs me a little bit.

One of my favourites on the album. I love the haunting melody after "and make it mine".

it kind of sounds like that lullaby/nursery rhyme that goes "daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird"

ITS IS THE MOCKING BIRD SONG gawsh. my friend told me that and ever since then i can actually remember the tune to this song i dont know what was wrong with me i was sitting at school and i had the words in my head but couldnt remember the tune but now im listening to it and singing away

These lines make me think that its about a relationship, and shes tired of them playing games. Some bits remind me of the "chase" before a relationship of being passed by, but then other bits make me think that they are in a relationship and shes tired of trying to make it work.
