In my opinion.. Its about a guy who fell in love.. Originally the girl thought the same way.. but after a while she realizes she only just wants to be friends. "Friend Zone". Which goes along with the "Settling for second best" Its better to be a friend.. then nothing at all. But its painful for him since He's always going to be on the sidelines as a friend and lying ("Yes i'm happy for you.. No I'm fine... its alright") to make her happy and not feel bad b/c he doesn't want to hurt and lose her further. But he still can't stop loving her on the inside. He hurts when your eyes are open (awake).. Because reality they can't be together.. But When he sleeps they're together in his dreams.

i'm personly obessed with song, ive been living in it for the past month now, playing it non stop i think it means that him and his girl had it all planned out and it never worked out , that i think he wishs they never really met, hes been going through so much pain, when he says " it only huts when your eyes are open", your eyes are open pretty much every waking hour of the day so hes saying hes like living in his pain, and yeah, its so hard to read this song, but you can like feel the pain coming from it and how hes just so hurt and doesnt even know what to do cause she lied so much.. which is what i did to my boyfrined all the time..

I think it's about just being hurt... something happens to you, and the pain is so much, but it only hurts when your eyes are open because your seeing whats going on, as in living is easy with eyes closed... I'm obsessed with this song too!

To me, in this song, something's obviously happened which was previously ignored. But now, it's been recognised, and he's opened his eyes to see the truch, which hurts. I'm not totally sure what the thing that's happened is, I'd imagine it's to do with relationships (maybe cheating? lies? Some sort of problem in their relationship that went ignored but now has come to light and made them split up? Something like that). It's hard to figure out the exact thing.
The reason why I'm hooked on this song, is because I recently got with a girl, and things have been really arkward. So we've decided not to be together til we figure it out. We were ignoring the problems over the last couple of days, but we've both opened our eyes. And although I've got confused/mixed feelings about where I want it to go, it's hit me relatively hard.
This song to me is about being sober. Seeing the world through sober eyes hurts because you notice all the truth and dangers out there.
