Rosenrot Lyrics

Sah ein Mädchen ein Röslein stehen
Blühte dort in lichten Höhen
Sprach sie ihren Liebsten an
ob er es ihr steigen kann

Sie will es und so ist es fein
So war es und so wird es immer sein
Sie will es und so ist es Brauch
Was sie will bekommt sie auch

Tiefe Brunnen muss man graben
wenn man klares Wasser will
Rosenrot oh Rosenrot

Tiefe Brunnen muss man graben
wenn man klares Wasser will
Rosenrot oh Rosenrot

Tiefe Brunnen muss man graben
wenn man klares Wasser will
Rosenrot oh Rosenrot
Tiefe Wasser sind nicht still

I have not seen the video, but it's supposed to be a play on a Goethe poem and a Brothers Grimm story. My first thoughts on it were that it was a play on the Goethe poem. The poem describes a boy taking pleasure from a rose, probably symbollic of a boy getting pleasure from taking the virginity of some girl. This song, though, introduces an inverse scenario: a girl is getting pleasure and the boy does whatever she tells him to do.

"A girl saw a little rose It bloomed there in bright heights" - Virginity

"The boy climbs the mountain in torment He doesn't really care about the view Only the little rose is on his mind He brings it to his sweetheart" -He doesn't care about the mechanical process of sex. Pleasing her is more important to him.

"At his boots, a stone breaks Doesn't want to be on the cliff anymore And a scream lets everyone know Both are falling to the ground" -Climax

Just my thoughts.

The poem is "Heidenröslein".

Yeah, and the video, well, it´s kinda wird, but yet beautiful. I like this new Rammstein style. (Or what I´ve heard of it). See, i bought the cd about three weeks ago, but cannot open it til Christmas. Im dying. :,( I thin I just get the chorus, it´s nice, if she wants it, she gets it!!

This song is amazing. The video is great, but it is weird too. I don't understand it because it doesn't have much to do with the song. Instead of the guy climbing a mountain to get a rose for the girl, he goes and murders someone for her. But then she set him up and gets him burned at stake. I also read on herzeleid.com that this song is based on a story by The Brothers Grimm. I can't wait to get this CD

I looked it up and it said that it was a poem by goethe, I really don´t know, i´m getting confused. Can somebody tell me wether it was inspired by Goethe or Brothers Grimm?

I'd say it's based on both. The first line is basically identical to the first line of the Goethe poem (Röslein auf der Heiden, since no one has mentioned it yet - sometimes also called Heidenröslein), and that connection is probably the first thing that comes to mind for anyone who knows of the poem. The flow of the story in the song itself is very typical of German literature - allowing for Rammstein's twisting everything :P - though offhand I don't recall which Grimm story, if any, the song could claim as inspiration. But if you ever read any of the original Grimm stories (and not the Disney/etc versions), you'll see that screwy ideas like the song and the video are rather common.

Does anyone know the specific Grimm story that this song borrows from? (if any)
